                Dang, that pic scared the heck out of me.
                Don't aim at the AC unit or water heater (if they are in the attic)

                  Poop in the attic and torn up insulation. No animals. The house is pier and beam. The ac duct runs down a shaft to under the house. The nest is next to the shaft. All the eaves and vents are screened well so I thought it got in under the house and climbed the shaft. The shaft has that old ribbed fiberboard so easy to climb. Looked at the outside of the foundation and didn't see anywhere it could burrow under, so it's got to be tunneling

                        What kind of poop? Don't rule out squirrel. They love attics and can get in very easily.
                        And I agree with you, rat shot I wouldn't think would fare well against a coon unless barrel was within a foot of it's head.

                              just remember some of them coons are tough........... shot one with a 50 cal b.p. 385 gr hp hollow base buffalo bullet,, that shot took him down the side of the neck and full length through the body,, made a 4th eye for him next to the third,, and it didnt kill him! it still took 2, 255 gr hard cast keith style semi wadcutter 45 colt slugs to the noggin to put him down... joker was 44" long!!!
