I am going with the majority ^^^^

I have heard of people being escorted out within an hour of giving their 2wk notice.

I guess there is no possibility of transfering within the company to a location closer to where you want to be?

They will fire you on the spot. Very common practice. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The right thing to do is to wait until you find a new job. Currently you have plans and that's all it is. Your plans could change with a phone call, and you and your wife might stay put. IMO you have nothing to say to your boss. Proper planning by a business is to cross train employees just incase ...

Personally, i would want to tell my boss now. But as stated above your on a slippery slope. The best advise (in my opinion) is to wait until you have secured another job and give your two weeks notice.

This is standard business protocol..... give them your two weeks when you have secured your other employment.

I would say do your best to line a job up back home, be open and honest with them from the get go and tell them you will need a hire in date that will afford you time to submit a 2 week notice with you current employer. This way the new company knows you are a man that has character and principle, you haven't burned any bridges, and you should be able to keep your soon to be previous employer as a contact, reference, and maybe employer again if needed. The telling your boss now, that's going to depend entirely on the company and your relationship. If you feel comfortable doing so, or obligated to so you can train up q new guy the it should be presented in that manner. I have found that bad news framed right just turns into the days news. Good luck, God bless.

In this economy and career environment i would put family first! Get something lined out in the new area first.

I have been managing people for 15 years and have never taken offense when someone gives me two weeks notice. Dont say a word to your boss or anyone in the office until the day you give your two weeks notice. Also keep in mind you said its a big company so like it or not things will keep going without you or the compensation would be at a level that would make it very hard for you to leave.

If you waint until you find a new job in the area and then tell the new employer you want to give your current employer a 2 week notice. Then once you give your two week notice(which should be enough time for them, because chances are if they're going to fire you they probably wont give you a two week notice) if they tell you to leave then you're only out of work for a maximum of 2 weeks, and if that's the case maybe the new company can start you earlier.

Definitely do not make your plans known. Still give 110% until you put in your two weeks but if you tell them sooner you might find yourself out the front door with no new job lined up yet.

Would you ever see yourself working for that company again?

As a hiring manager, I would say that you should find a job, get the offer in writing and then give a 30 day notice. It is likely you will not have to work out that 30 days; however, that really gives you lots of kudo's and allows you to help them continue to manage operations as they look for a replacement. In addition, you are not going to a competitor in the local market so, if you have a good relationship with them, they should not walk you when you tender your resignation. I would give the 30 day notice though just as a courtesy. When you do give your resignation, give lots of thought to your letter... not just "effective ______ I am resigning my position". Let them know how much you appreciate the opportunity, how hard the decision was, you value the experience, doing this for family.. etc etc.
