Advice on how to leave a job?

Seeking advice from the green screen braintrust...I am finding myself in a unfamiliar situation. 1 year ago I took a new job with a fairly large company but the office I work out of is a satellite office separate from the main office. There are only 4 of us here and things are pretty laid back and informal which I do like. Over the last few months some issues have come up back home and me and my wife decided it was time to move back. (Southeast Tx is both our home area). She has already put in her notice at her job and will be moving back about mid September. I cannot leave until I find a new job in the golden triangle area. My question is should I tell my supervisor what is going on in my world so he won't be shocked when i turn in my notice? We are a close knit group since we are so small and I feel on one hand he needs to be aware of my future plans so they can start to make plans themselves. On the other hand I don't want to burn any bridges behind me. If they brought someone in to replace me so I can get them trained up, once there ready to go I don't want to be let go without another job to fall back on. I don't think he would let me go, but the people above him in the main office may tell him to. I'm not sure how long it will take to find another job. It could be few weeks or 6 months or more. Should I tell him what our plans are or should I wait until I have found something else then give my notice.

IMO, if you give at least two weeks notice you should not have burned any bridges.

I would go ahead and let my immediate boss know what was happening. Dont know what business your in but its hard to replace a key member of your team. I was in the same boat a couple of months back and turned in my resignation but still was obligated to complete the projects i was involved in. Just my opinion.

Dont say a word until you have a start date with the new company.

Exactly. I have seen several who wanted to do "the right thing" and were told their services were no longer needed and out the gate they went. Once you have a job lined up, then do the right thing.

This, I have asked employees to leave once they give notice, I've found that no matter how a good of an employee someone is, they aren't focused after they give notice.

The truth is always the right thing to do. If your boss is a man of character, he will understand and work with you. If not, then that's on him and your conscience will be clear.

Wait on confirmation of a start date with the new company, give a two week notice, and kick rocks.......

Now days most places will cut you loose after a 2 week notice is given anyway.

My two cents would be to not say a word until you have another job.

At my old job most employs that told the boss they were leaving would be walked out the same day.

As a business owner for many years, I would say if you let then know your future plans that would be very nice of you, but you are taking a big chance.
I think you have to put your/family needs first. Don't tell them until you find another job.

That's a tough situation. You're at a disadvantage anytime you can't list your current employer as a reference. And, of course, any potential future employer is going to pay attention to how you handle leaving your current employer, since they know you might be leaving them in the same way someday. There's risk in anything you do. No advice here but to follow your instincts.

do whatever let's you sleep at night. Sometimes the right thing, isn't always the most beneficial or easiest thing to do.

                              This!

Don't say a word. They can get rd of you at any point in time. Especially if they know you're leaving.

I figure Texas is a right to work state. No one owes anyone anything. You can walk out today and it would be fine. Professional courtesy says to give 2 Wes notice, which I've always done, but if there were an instance where I was forced to, I would just walk out.

Just don't give more can 2 weeks notice.
