I'm new to this longer range game and appreciate all the feedback so far and that to come.

Also anyone on here know of a place that can I swing a good deal on a Nikon scope?
Samplelist.com . I have the 4.5-14 Buckmaster on my .338 win mag with the nikoplex. As much as I love it, if I had to do it again I'd go with the mildot

What are you going to be shooting at 400 yrds with that 7-08? That is a bit far for that caliber IMO for deer. I would not go over 300 or so with it.

As for scopes I am a firm believer in spending the most money on the scope less on the rifle. What I mean is THe higher end scopes are way better than the el cheapo's and the high end guns are not as much greater than the low end ones these days. I would not by Nikon to begin with, but if I did it would be no less than a Monarch. BTW I have a buckmasters 4.5-14x40 BDC and I am not impressed. Look at Viper line of Vortex

I bought the 7-08 to replace my .270 and like I said 400 would be max. I shoot maybe 125 yds where I hunt now. But I may get a wild hair and want to go antelope hunting one day. So that's where the 400 may or may not come into play. Thanks again for the info.

I have one of each. I like the Buckmaster better but it is on the rifile I use the most. They are both good quality but I lean more to the Buckmaster.

Monarch or buckmaster if you can get it. I have a Prostaff however and have not had any issues with it what so ever. It does what it is supposed to do and is clear.

Thanks again for all the replies. I think I am leaning toward the buckmaster mil-dot model. I'm going to go see one side by side to the prostaff and see what I think.

the only difference between the prostaff and the buckmaster is that the glass in the buckmaster has been polished a little bit more and they have more coatings on the glass and are water and fog proof both have a 25 yr warranty and the key to the bdc is that it has to be on the highest power on the scope to work correctly to be on at the next yardage dot i have the buckmaster and love it visit samplelist.com can get real good deals on them there if you don't mind a reconditioned scope

Just to be open and honest, I have been doing some work work for Nikon for about the past year. I have been using Nikon Optics for over 15 years by choice. I was not sure I would like the BDC reticle and a guy I know was asked to try one out 8-9 years ago. He did, then let me try it out on a Ks. deer hunt. I mounted it on my 300 win. mag, zero for 200 yards. To make a long story shorter, I always tag some does for the freezer. 2 came out, I shot 1 at 50 yds and the other ran into a cut milo field. She just happened to stop by a cedar bush I ranged at 427 yards. I fifgured what the heck, if I clean one deer I may as well do 2,plus I get to try out this new fangled aiming system. I put her on the second circle pulled the trigger and suddeny can't see her after muzzle flip. Well I go get my Ranger, clean the first deer winch her in the back , drive over to the cedar bush and there is my second deer. Heart lung shot. I was sold. I never gave that scope back either !
Nikon now has the BDC reticle even more fine tuned with the use of their Spot On Ballistic Program. Go to Nikon Hunting.com and click Spot On logo, register,it's all FREE. You can then enter all your particular shooting data in to the system and get detailed yardage for each BDC circle. Does it work? I've taken groups of guys to different Ranges and 1 place in Missouri 18 guys using 6 different stock rifles hit 4 in. jars of Tanerite at 627 yards! The BDC reticles work and work well.
You asked the difference in ProStaff and Buckmaster. Some of the coatings are different and the Buckmaster has adjustable Parralax too. This years 2011 ProStaff is the best ever in my opinion. Now if has fully multicoated lenses and up to 98% light transmission which makes it tops for early morning late evening shooting.
I know this is a lot to read and I apologize, Just wanted to tell you one of my
experiences with the BDC reticle and pass on some info as well.
Any questions, feel free to drop me a note.
