    Which Nikon scope and why?

Hey guys I'm looking for a scope to put on my 7mm-08 and want to know the main difference in the Nikon Prostaff and Buckmaster lines? I'm looking at the 4.5-14 BDC models. Is there a justifiable quality difference that warrants an extra $100? Let me know what you think.

Buckmaster at the minimum. I have a 4-14x40 with the Nikoplex reticle on my 17HMR and it's a darn decent piece of glass. (I don't like BDC reticles, I'd rather have mil-dots)

The Monarch is noticeably better, IMO.

The Prostaff is their budget line, and performs as such. I rank it with Tasco...

I have the Nikon Buckmaster 4-14x40 on my .270, and love it. Most of the time it's one shot a the range to make sure it's still on, and off to the deer lease.

          Wow! Really?
I have two prostaffs and love em. I saw very little difference in my prostaff and my buddys Buckmaster, if any.

I have the Nikon ProStaff BDC on my 7mm Rem Mag. It is a great scope for the money. Best 100 bucks I ever spent.

Thanks guys. I guess it's a 50/50 split. I'll ask my gun smith what he thinks.

Why the dislike of BDC gummi? Is there something I should be cautious about?

I'm with gummi. I don't like the bdc either. You can be much more accurate with a small mildot than those open circles.

The BDC just looks cluttered to me. Never have cared much for the open circle aiming point in an optic. (I have demo'd but didn't care for the Coyote Special either)

                    [soapbox]
Also, the gradation of a BDC is 'close'. I still think it's each shooter's responsibility to find out just where the bullet impacts at a given distance from their particular rifle. Same goes for manufacturer's specifications on a box of ammo, even though it says it drops "x" at a given distance from zero, you should still check and be darned sure before heading out into the field.

                      I have a Monarch 4X12X40 and a Nikon Buckmaster 3x9x40.

                      I also use a Luepold VX111, 3.5X10X40

Honestly, They are all excellent scopes but to me the buckmaster is the best deal for $200. The others I think your paying for the name and not too much extra clarity

I've gotta 3x9x40 buckmaster on my .243. Good clarity and doesnt get outta wack from shooting or traveling.

Good point gummi. So is the mil-dot a better option? Also if I'm shooting out to say 600 yards, with out BDC or Mil-dot how do you adjust accordingly? Do you remember to hold high X number of inches at certain distances?

I'm new to this longer range game and appreciate all the feedback so far and that to come.

Also anyone on here know of a place that can I swing a good deal on a Nikon scope?

If you plan on shooting out to 600 yds., spend the most you can afford, then a little more if you can swing it.

I doubt I'll go 600 but that was the example I used. My max on a given day would be 400 or so. Thanks again for the replies.
