being 7'7 and being able dunk or put a ball in a hole from a foot away isnt talent. Sorry.

not comparing the 2, but if Yao was 6'6" with his talent, he wouldn't have been a #1 pick and most likely wouldn't of even been in the NBA to begin with.

no one can predict injuries in any sport , as injuries will ruin anyones career (see names below).
Yao was drafted when the NBA was was focused around a dominant center or big man to help win Championships. (Now the game has changed to the need for a smart PG. ) At 7'6" he was a "no brainer" that could shoot FT's, and had finesse , although not very physical. Being from China, you had billions of people following him which led to increase jersey sales and revenue for the Rockets.
In his eight-year career in the NBA, Yao averaged 19.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks in 33 minutes per game. It's sad to see the talented big man pushed out of the game at only the age of 30, but his body simply couldn't stand the rigors of the physical NBA game.
to my TBH brothers, would you also consider these professional athletes a "bust" b/c their careers were cut short due to injury ? Imagine what could have been had these players never been injured
Bo Jackson - Bo knows Football, Baseball, and Bowhunting
Sandy Koufax - retired early due to arthritis in his arm. He was only 30, but dominated pitching his last five years
Grany Hill - way to many injuries with tons of promise
Penny Hardaway - from an NBA all-star to a has been
Bobby Orr - over a dozen knee surgeries in his NHL career before injuries forced him to retire. Elected into HOF at age 31 , the youngest to that day.
Mike Bossy - He scored more than 50 goals per season for 9 seasons straight (a feat achieved by only him and Wayne Gretzky) before a back injury took him out of the game. He scored 50 goals in 50 games. He scored 53 goals as a rookie. He scored 100 goals faster after turning pro than any other hockey player, including Gretzky.
Mark "the bird" Fidrich - freak accident retrieving fly balls
Gale Sayers -
1965 - Rookie of the Year, second in yardage behind the great Jim Brown. Pro Bowl. #1 All Purpose Yards.
1966 - Led NFL in rushing, all purpose yards, made Pro Bowl.
1967 - Playing for a crappy team, he still managed #3 in rushing, and still #1 in all purpose yards. Pro Bowl.
1968 - leading league in rushing with an astounding 6.2 ypc. ... .injures knee after 8 games.
1969 - Tries comeback. Leads league in rushing AGAIN.
1970 - Another knee injury ends his career.Last edited by Cajun Blake; 07-08-2011, 12:37 PM.
