He was considerably more than servicable. His career was a LOT better than his recent stats and injuries will reflect. He was also very important in opening up the NBA market in China, and gaining the ability to recruit payers from there.

Here is the 2002 draft and the only name that stands out is Carlos Boozer. Udonis Haslem was undrafted that year also. Everyone else is a total no name, if they are even still in the league!!

quite a few names of 1st rd players who can ball and still in the Association . I agree that 80% or more were busts or just ignorant like Jay Williams (crotch rocket accident)

      Ne'ne' - Denver

      Caron - Dallas

      Tayshaun - Detroit

      Amare' - BEAST !!!

He was a class act all the way and I will miss seeing him on the court.

Certainly not a bust by any means. I think they got what they expected. How many big men like that have not had leg/foot problems? I like watching him play. Always felt like if he had gotten the calls/no calls that Shaq got he would have been a monster as well. The only thing that stopped him was being in foul trouble.

No Stoudomire really doesnt stand out to me. Giant sack of "Whats he ever done???" Rookie of the year and that is about it. No college championship, no NBA championship. He is like a tall Alan Iverson IMO. Caron Butler gets a ring by default becasue of injuries this year.

The others are on marginal teams with marginal careers. Boozer actually contributed more than any others this year for his team. he is still a game changer when he want to be.

I thought Boozer was a virtual no show for Chicago this year until the second round of the playoffs....

With Stoudemires' resurrected career in New York this past year, I think I'd take his sack of "Whats he ever done?" five times over Boozer...

he was one of the most profitable athletes of this era. His Chinese connection brought huge amounts of profit to the USA, NBA, and Rockets. Its been said above but class act and true teammate!! Greg Oden is a dissappointment of 1st overall(so far)

Yao was a good pick given what the alternatives were, but I don't think he was a number 1 pick. Yao biggest problem, outside of injuries, was the fact that he never had a real team to play with.
Was he a dominant force? No
Was he the teams focal point? Sometimes
Did his team really help him to success? Absolutely not

He's no Wade, Dirk, Kobe or any of the focal figures in the league (I'm not comparing these guys talent wise.)
But, he was a very good big man when he was healthy, and he was put in a situation where the Rockets were trying to draft and build around him. After his draft the league changed to more versatile styles like Wade and Lebron and Kobe as the focal points. It isn't fair to him or the league to criticize Yao for things he can't control. How many of you nay sayers could play with him, even if he was 6' even? Yeah, none of you.

And all of this from a die hard Mavs fan!

FYI - AS was drafted straight out of HS , never went to college

Boozer appears to have "contributed more to his team" b/c his team was more athletic, had the League MVP - Rose, and the Bulls went deeper in the playofffs. CHI plays together as a TEAM, whereas NY is a bunch of no defense playin' individuals

                              compare the 2010-11 numbers

                              Boozer (1x All-star) - 17.5 ppg , .3 blocks/g , 9.5 rbnds/g , 2.5 assists
                              Amare' (6x All-star) - 25.3 ppg, 1.9 blocks/g, 8.2 rbnds/g , 2.6 assists

I'd take Stoudemire all day long over Boozer

I would imagine he was a good pic financially.

To the casual observer, he really did look awkward on the court. I said LOOK. Think he was a very respectable player, but he played 'undersized' for his position - he was not built to be a dominant big man, but everyone looked at him as one due to his height.
