Ice Chest Help?????

Ok, I have to haul all my meat with out it thawing from Houston TX to Denver CO. This trip will take me 2 days probably because my wife and 2 kids (3yo and 5yo) will be following me.

Im contaplating on getting a Yetti, is it worth it, and what are the other best possable options?

yes I plan on using dry ice

We have hauled frozen meat from TX to cali and used a chest freezer, it worked great and the meat was still frozen.

Storing the ice chest yo uare going to use in a walk in freezer for a day or so before you pack it up will help some.

I have a stand up freezer, do you think the meat would stay good in there?

Keep in minde we will make this trip July 22nd and it will be hot as you know what.

You can buy several large coolers and lots of dry ice for the cost of a yeti. Just saying.

An Igloo and some dry ice will work just fine. Two days won't be any problem at all.

Chest freezers are usually good for 4-5 days without power such as after a hurricane.

I have thrown 4 gallon bags and a couple of quart bags of fish in my coolerand had to literally chip it out of the ice 3 1/2 days later. I put a layer of ice in the bottom, frozen stuff directly out of the deep freeze(-10 deg f) and covered with more ice. It all froze into a big block. This was with a new but fairly inexpensive igloo. If you want to get the meat out without damaging the bags I recommend wrapping it in another bag first. It should handle 2 days with no problem.

Yeah it should be good in the stand up chest for two days..... when the ice storms hit and the power went out up here for that whole day my deep freeze in the garage was fine. I know it wasn't as hot as it is now, but you should be good. Pack dry ice in there with it.

Are you moving there or why do you have to keep it frozen?

Make sure the cooler is absolutely full. What isn't meat, should be ice/dry ice. Put a towel over the top to insulate the cold stuff from the heat coming from the sun shining on the lid......and duct tape the lid shut nice and tight, and don't peek! Keep it out of the sun as much as possible.

this is exactly what we do with our food cooler on summer trips to the mountains chasing trout.....it will be a solid brick after 3-4 days

Any good extreme type cooler (Coleman Xtreme, Igloo MaxCold, Yeti for examples) packed with ice or dry ice and not opened will get you two days will get frozen meat to its destination. A Yeti might get you a week but that is not the goal.

Yep this and Tell ur wife u need a Yeti to make sure it makes it...The towel and Duct-Tape are the key in this ..

Put weather stripping around the lid, this makes them like a yeti

If you're going to have the chest freezer in the rear of a pickup, keep the sun off it or get some thin insulation board with silver reflective tape on it and duct tape it to the top and sides to reflect the sunlight. If you're using dry ice, remember it expands into CO2 gas and if the container is sealed, it will 'pop' or burst.
