Update: I had ARS out yesterday. They did a load calc and it came out to 3.9 tons. They qouted me a 13seer 4 ton unit for $8000.

Is that dollars or pesos?! WOW!!!

Update: Finally got a guy with what I think is a reasonable price. He quoted me $4100 to for a four ton unit. Hes going to add a return air and install a digital thermostat. The outside system is a ruud but I forgot to ask what brand the inside system will be. I do remember him not liking the current inside system with the INTERTHERM name on it.

So that whole unit is toast or just the compressor? I don't understand why you are replacing everything. I'm buying a house where both the outside units were completely stolen. I got a quote of $1000 total to replace them both. One is 2 ton and one is 3.

I would make sure they are NEW and come with warranty from the manufactur. Heck i couldnt buy two condensers MY COST for that.

I go the quote from a friend who does commerical work for wal-mart. The units would be new and at cost.

The system is 14 yrs old and rusted out pretty bad on the inside unit. I would rather replace everything and not have to worry about it for awhile rather than patch it up and have it crap out on me again in a few months.

I just had my AC go out and it was the dual capacitor. I have 2200 SQ ft and he said that I would need a 5 ton unit.

The quote was $7500 for 13 and $13k for a 16 unit.

BTW it cost me $300 to replace the capacitor, it sounded kinda high but not really much you can do when you're sweating your butt off.

Update: So after rethinking my options and finding out that my duct's needed replacing we decided to go with a york package unit. $4500 installed. it seems to cool the house really well. We are keeping the thermo at 74 and are plenty comfortable. The only thing that is left to see is how the elec. bill is going to run. its 13 seer. Thanks again for everyones help.
