    Any AC guys out there?

Well the inevitable finally happened to our 14yr old system. Had a repair man out yesterday to check things out, and he determined that the compressor was fried. After looking everything over he suggested that I replace the inside and outside units, and quoted me a price of $5100. This is my first time dealing with AC replacement so I am not sure if this is a fair price or not. This is for a 5ton unit on a 1300 sq/ft mobile home.

that is what is on it now. Maybe I can but, he told me that the usually go bigger on mobile homes.

Not sure of the difference in homes versus mobile homes but I have a 3.5 ton on my 1800 sf home. It works just as it is supposed to. Surely the mobile home doesnt require that much of a difference..

I have a 4 ton on a 2200 sf mobile home. It is also a heat pump. Saves lots of money during the winter over the conventional electric heat.

we hardly ever turn the heat on. We are PJ's and electric blanket people in the winter.

I would also get a Second Opinion on your unit, a Compressor can be replaced and it sounds like he is Over-Selling you a little with the 5 ton and inside and outside units.

Mobile home it is still over sized I have a 4 ton but it is a two speed on my 1400 sq ft mobile home. Also not sure of what type of duct system you have but if it is the standard modular home duct system you will need a high static air handler that are made for modular homes or a variable speed motor seems to work just as good and better, that it what i have on my house.

Sounds like your heading for mold issues to me..... Sounds over sized to me too. Unless you have a massive heat load a 3ton unit should be sufficient

Why would I be headed for mold?

Because with a 5 ton the unit will not cycle long enough to remove the humidity from the air.

If thats the case I probably already have mold. This unit is the original unit installed in 97. I requested quotes from absolute comfort air and ars. I am going to ask them if a load calc. would be necessary. I am sure I would be able to save some money by going down in tonnage.
