I've always known that as a Dobson fly - hellgramite being the larval form of the same critter you find under rocks in creeks and rivers. We used to catch them as a great bait for smallmouths.

I was always told those were dobson flies as well
The larval form (hellgramite) are great bait for channel cats in the Llano and San Gabriel. Just stay clear of the pinchers and never, and I mean NEVER, put them in your pocket while wading the river.
