    Unknown bug

one of my co-wokers sent me this picture (because I like the outdoors) and said they found the insect near her house (near 121 and 114) north Irving area. I have no clue what this is. So I have submitted this to the green screen for answers.

I've always known that as a Dobson fly - hellgramite being the larval form of the same critter you find under rocks in creeks and rivers. We used to catch them as a great bait for smallmouths.

Its a Dobson fly, I had no seen one before last year. Had several on the window screan on cabin in Concan. Was about 4 inches long and scared the $*%*# out of the girls.

If it gets ahold of you you wont care what it is doing because I can tell you from experience it HURTS

We had one fly in the boat once on the river, came to the spotlight and fell in the bottom of the boat. Thought it was a bat because it was so big, shined the light on it and proceeded to pick it up, BIG MISTAKE

It is a Dobson Fly, but it comes from a Hellgramite. I was partly right

Yep, had one land on a little girl at the dance at Garner last year. We used to catch the larvae and use them for bait.

awesome bass bait is what that is!!! Yessir that is an adult Dobson fly...the larval version are commonly referred to as hellgrammites. They do pinch but if you run the fishing hook along their back bass can't resist!

Hellgramite is the larval stage for Hexagenia Limbata, the largest Burrowing Mayfly.
I should be on the AuSable river tonight because this is the time of year they usually start hatching.
Late nights flyfishing with a Spentwing Hex for Trophy Browns, nothing like the Big Bugs of June!!!
