Same thing here bud. I am right handed and put the strap and hold the net in my right hand. I also dont throw it like a frisbie (left to right). I grab about 3/4 way up the net, pinch one weight at that same spot....then w/ my left hand grab another weight about 2 ft from the 1st. Hard to explain in words....lol
Counter clock wise. Left foot forward right foot back and swing my body from right to left counter clock wise. Keep in mind that the net is throwing itself. You are just starting the motion and letting go all at the same time.
Ok....I get it now. I've never seen it thrown that way but it's the same concept. Kinda forehand vs backhand throw. I may try that in the future but it would probably be as unnatural as wiping my hinny with my left hand.
I can't believe I have been jacking with cast nets for 25 years here and there and never really got the hang of it....but I can sling one mean taco....
till the idiot guide....now I can throw the net like it's nothing....
It can't be put into words/text. Or even watching a video. Hands on, and lots of practice.
I hunt in Montague some, and hang out on Texoma pretty regular. Look me up sometime. I'll give ya some pointers.
You can catch TONS of shad over the spill way at Roberts. Course, you have to tie 40' of mule tape to your braided net rope, to reach the water. Sure does make for some "tired" arms at the end of the deal though! lol.
I don't hold the rope though....
I tie it to my wrist and let the rest fall at my feet.
Grab the net about 1/3 of the way down while it's hanging at it's peak.
Pick out a single weight and bring it to your throwing hand.
Hold your throwing arm out and find another weight, from the inside strand of weights, about 2/3's of the way down and grab it with your non-throwing hand. Hold that weight near your armpit, or by your ribs.
ThTs the throwing position.
When you throw it, keep your arm out. You want to act as if you where a mechanical clay target thrower... <--- what ever they're called...
Right handed: draw the net behind you to your right side (left side for lefty)
Get a little bend in your knees (don't need much, it's just so you don't hurt you back)
And swing your throwing arm towards the horizon. Keep your non-thowing hand close to your body.
Three things to remember here is:
1. When you're swinging your arm make sure to weights are lagging behind. Don't jerk them. You want to get on a level plane as soon and as smooth as possible. You're trying to make the net spin like a very slow moving frizz-bee.
2. Let the nt go at the point you want it to fly in. It's not a baseball. You don't have to let it go early or late or anything. When your arm is pointed where you want the net o go, just let go.
3. Like anything else we do, follow thru with your arm. Don't exaggerate the follow thru, just make sure you don't stop your arm when you release the net.
That's the best explanation that I can tell someone how...
I'll still try to get the video cam out if I have time today.
Just found out that we have a lot going on today...
I can throw a cast net very well, but after reading some of these explanations, I may not be able any more. Something you have to learn in person, I believe. :P
