I had a Question, my catahoula has found three deer so far. On two of them they were still alive but laying down with their heads on the ground like they were dead, and the other was DOA. My dog dosen't grab the hams like yours or other dogs I know but will lay down next to the deer and wait for you to come to him. Now the question: did you train him to grab them or did it just come natural? I was kinda hoping/not hoping one of the two bucks that were still alive would get up and run and maybe perk his interest, but they both stayed there until I got to them. Sorry for hi-jacking the thread for a minute.

JR, Trapper was 5 months old on his first deer and it took all but 3 seconds for him to dig in. Rosco was a little more reserved and I had to encourage him a little but by his third deer he jumped right in.
I put them on a turkey I shot and Rosco was a little disappointed in the find but I got him over that: First Turkey Track
Usually they always went for the throat but I didn’t want them ripping the cape of a trophy animal so I always pulled them to the ham. This is the first year Trapper will pass by the head/throat and go straight for the ham.
holepuncher, Trapper & Rosco are 4.5 years old. Trudy, Trapper and Rosco’s Grandmother is 2 or 3 finds away from being introduced into the Tracking Dog Hall of Fame. The bloodline is there you just have to give you and her the experience and she’ll do great!
