    Breeder Deer Privitization Bill

    'TWS' = The Wildlife Society.

    TWS Urges Rejection of TX Breeder Deer Privatization Bill
    TWS wrote to members of the Texas State House Committee on Culture, Recreation, and Tourism on 22 April 2011, urging their rejection of a bill that would privatize breeder deer in Texas. “Breeder deer” are those deer that are raised on private land or “farmed.” HB 3775 would transfer legal ownership of breeder deer currently held in trust by Texas Parks and Wildlife for all Texas citizens to private individuals. TWS warned that this unprecedented giveaway of public wildlife resources for private gain will have negative implications on wildlife management in Texas and beyond. TWS opposes private ownership of native wildlife because it violates the Public Trust Doctrine, a core component of the North American model of Wildlife Conservation. The bill is currently pending in Committee .

          Ive never understood why deer would be any different than cattle, im not saying its right or wrong but in my eyes its the same thing. The owner buys and breeds pen raised animals for profit just like cattle and horses. Thats how I see it anyway, to each their own.

              The difference is that as of now, the species is owned by the State of Texas whether you bought a particular one and brought it to your property or not. I believe I am correct in saying that if it somehow leaves your property, your neighbor has every right to shoot it and claim it as his/her own.

              Cattle, on the other hand, have never been considered wildlife owned by the state.

                We are back to this debate again it all boils down to people not liking the fact that others are making a living off of something they don't agree with. Just for debate sake why do you agree with the position that the TWS is taking. I for one am very opinionated on this subject and disagree with the TWS stance. I don't think that the privatization of Breeder Deer will cause one bit of harm to the sport we love and further more how would the privatization of breeder deer affect your everyday deer hunter anyway. My guess is that it would not affect you or your hunting lands in the least bit. Deer in breeder pens were bought and paid for and were never living outside of someones pens, why is it fair for a government agency to have the "ownership" over something I have paid for. Just my .02

                  The state is against it because they dont want to be kicked out of the private sectors pocket. It is not about giving away public wildlife resources, it is about the money and only the money. IMO. Doesn't the state get enough.

                    I don't think deer breeding will effect my hunting. And if the state sold deer to a deer farm and that sell served the common good of the people of the state i would not have a problem with people making money on the deer. But to serve the people of the state the farm would have to breed and raise the deer for a purpose like cattle IE as a source of food. Currently the only reason to raise deer in captivity is to experiment on antler size for profit and that is not right in most people's eyes. A 3-500" deer is a science experiment. So if you want to farm deer fine grow deer for food otherwise find a non native beast and experiment all you want

                        I think the powers that be should have a hand in deer breeding. Can someone say CWD???

                          Problem with this legislation and most that try to address a "new" topic is that as simple as they may try and keep the legislation, it is the tip of the iceberg. This will open a can of worms. It opens the door to a civil nightmare where the courts are left to make sense of the intent of the bill.

                          Do we really need more laws?

                            I guess we don't need more laws especially ones that give you the ownership of something you legally paid for with your own money. I think everyone should turn over the titles to their vehicles and homes because the state knows how to care for those thing better than you do. How about the state start reimbursing some of these ranches for their feed bills for the states deer. Just sayin.

                              Here is my question: if you privatize the ownership of the "breeder deer" then it stands to reason that the offspring are privately owned (unless of course, one of the parents was wild). So, what happens then to deer season? Who is the state to tell me when I can and can't kill MY LIVESTOCK? Would it then be year round deer hunting?
