    The cost of hunting....a discussion..

The post about 32 year old youngster complaining about the cost and commercialization of hunting reminded me about an interesting find I came across last hunting season.

In the past couple of years, I have managed to thumb through a pile of old magazines, circa early-late 1980s, my landowner had in boxes in the main cabin. I spent some of my down time just enjoying go through all the old articles, perusing the ads and looking at the equipment we had way back when. I even found a few Buckmasters in there with a young and spry Jackie Bushman....

As I read through the "letters to the editor" in an early 80s magazine, a few of the replies to articles struck me as interesting. You see, even back then, there were people complaining about the high cost of $200 leases, pricing the good ole boys out of the market, the high cost of licenses, the high cost of equipment and how much hunting had become a business and about the almighty dollar. There were even complaints about too many ads in the very magazine I was reading.... and TTH would have made this magazine look like a dissertation.... That was almost 30 years ago.

I was amazed to see that the same talk went on back then just like it goes on today. Folks are still complaining about the same stuff like it is some recent phenomenon now....when, in fact, it probably went on years before these mags were even published.

Why does it happen? I guess every year the price gets to high for somebody different and it becomes something new to them, but then again I think some folks just like to complain. It gives them something to do...lol...

Anyway, I found it interesting that even back then that hunting was too commercial, too expensive and would be the downfall of hunting and here we are 30 years later saying the same....

This is why I'm currently trying out the public land opportunities. Rather than complain about how I can't afford an expensive deer lease I figured I'd just shut up and go do what I love...hunt. And if you really want to hunt...go hunting on public land. If you want to have a place to park your fancy 5th wheel, spend a bunch of money on feeders so that you can go fill them up every other month and then go hope that your hard work pays off during the 4 or 5 trips you make during deer season and drink lots of beer around a campfire with your buddies...well, go drop $3,000 to $5,000 on a lease. Otherwise keep your hard earned money in your pocket and go enjoy the almost 1,000,000 acres of public land our great state offers up to us.

People are always gonna whine about money in some fashion Jason...It's just kinda wierd as I can see both sides.

I will beg, borrow or steal (so to speak) to make sure I get on the deer lease but would never pay to hunt dove / ww in Texas. Now I will pay to hunt ww in Mexico as that is a different ball game, but I've always just drove around and found a field with birds and either got run off or in most cases made friends with the farmer / landowner and got permission to come any time I wanted.

Best I can tell is a lot of Texans are the opposite of me and will gladly pay a nominal fee to get in a good ww/dove hunt but many in that same group will not come up with the coin it takes to get on a good deer lease and complain about the cost??

There were folks complaining about the cost of leasing a place the day the first lease was made..

I know I never complained about the cost of a hunting place 30 years ago but that was because I had the keys to over 50 places and permission to hunt them all for free.. But as they started leasing them off and my key chain dwindled in population I soon found out what others were complaining about..

                  This.

There were probably native americans complaining about how much deerskin they had to trade to get someone to knap some new stone broadheads.

You can't fight the progression of things. When an activity requires more than your bare hands to do, someone has to make equipment. Thanks to capitalism and the free market, there will be more than one maker of equipment, which creates competition, marketing, commercialization, etc. This competition drives makers to create better gear.

I don't really see the commercialization and popularity of hunting as a downside. Nobody is making me take part in any of it. I buy the things I think are necessary and don't buy the things I don't think I need. I do get better gear as a result.

And as for lease prices, more hunters combined with less hunting land equals higher prices. It's supply and demand, it sucks, but that's the way it is. Deal with it. If you don't like lease prices, buy your own land. If you can't afford to hunt, then you can't afford to hunt. There's plenty of things I'd like to get into that I can't afford.

I believe we are quickly becoming a generation of whiners......if you dont want to pay.....then dont play.

I find it hard to listen to someone complain about their "past time" activities. kinda like gripping about having to take a shower if you ask me.

30 years ago I paid $110.00 a year and just barly was able to come up with the money every year. Now I pay $8000.00 a year and it is pretty much the same. Nothing really changed, not really

Old man told me long ago, "Son if you have to worry how much it costs you don't need to be doing it". Same holds true today.

My first lease was at Bend and 10 of us leased 1500 acres for $1500 total.. and that included the cabins during hunting season.. and year around access to the property for hunting and fishing.. we could stay in any unrented cabin or bring a trailer during the summer..

I hunt with nothing but old men and they always go on drunk rants about how expensive it is too shoot a deer these days. Im much younger but from everything Ive heard 30 years ago you could go knock on the neighbors door and he would be more than happy to let you hunt on his place... and everyone wasnt all caught up on game management and shooting a 170" deer, and every big buck pic was in the sunday paper and showed off at church on sundays (the good ol days) as my dad likes to call them.
I sure wish it was that easy today!
As long as I have been hunting WT...past 14 years my pops has complained about our lease price when I was 12 he was compalining and over a decade later hes paying 3 times what he did back than and complaining just as much.
No matter what we will always find a way to hunt though its our obsession. Ive been fortunate to be on a good lease my whole life but if it ever came to it Id hunt public land. Complaining about prices is just part of human nature I guess, everyone always wants more for less. It aint ever gunna change!
