Up here in Colorado (which was once part of the Republic of Texas you know) - they try to anglocize all the spanish names - Buena Vista is Byu-NA Vis-ta, Salida is Sa-lee-da, Pueblo is Pyu-ee-blow

I always wonder how Amarillo escaped the spanish pronunciation

That's right. Kinda like Loraine is pronounced LO-rain... not Luh-rain.... learned that the hard way.
