    257R v. 25-06

shooting the same grain bullet (i.e. 85 gr pill) , the 257R is approx. 200 fps slower yet utilizes 10 less grs. of powder

the 257 is pretty efficient and ideal for coyotes, TX white tail , and pronghorn

the 25-06 will be faster , yet at a premium with more recoil and more powder burned

IMO, the 257 Ackley Improved is the cats meow
Mr. Blake is right on about the 257AI. Also as stated above the 250-3000 is also a great choice when looking at a youth caliber.

The .257 will have a less recoil but I figure you would put a nice cushy butt plate on the rifle anyways. It's important not to start them off with to much gun. You don't want them to start flinching or becoming afraid of the recoil. The .22 long rifle is a great plinker to start out with then after a few years ease her into the .22 hornet and after that you can see how she takes to either a .257 Roberts or a 25-06.

When I was shooting competitively the big bore shooters would shoot the small bore competition before there big bore events because it would help them out with the follow through and the flinching.

I think the 257 would be perfect for her...plus it's a cool old round......

...my greatgranny's 722 in the roberts is THE medicine for kiddos. I load for adults with 120gr Hornady hp's but no kid gets to range shoot it unless they are already having fun w/ a 20ga.

that gun has at least a dozen folks who have take their first deer with this one particular rig...has an older 2.5x8 leupy on it.

Hey Cullen, I'd go with the 25-06. Both are great guns and will work so in my opinion the only reason the 25-06 is better is it's a little flatter and has more down range energy apples to apples.

It also will be easier to find ammo for and will give you more options in loading which is important so you can find the best ammo for the gun.
I think it's kinda heavy still for most kids. I have a Tikka T3 in 243 if you ever want to try it with her.

I say go with the 257 for your little girl, and that might prove to be a little challenging at first, but maybe not if she gets to shooting the 22 hornet for a few years with some confidence. My 25-06 with 117 grain Federals IMO would be too much for a young girl, but kiddos are all different in the way they react.
