    25/06 vs 257 Roberts

OK guys I got a question. I am going to look into a gun for my daughter. I have a TC Encore and might just get a new barrel for it so my daughter will have a decent gun in a couple yrs. Im starting her off with a 22 hornet when she turns 4 just to give here something that we can start shooting and enjoying.

My question I have both available for reloading so if you had the choice which would you choose. I now there is the nastalga of the 257 but for allaround purposes what would you choose.

If I was gonna do a 257 it would be weatherby. 87 - 120 grains ballistics are sweet!!!

Go with a 250-3000. Alot less recoil for a kid and it gets the job done.

The only REAL difference is availability and expense of ammo. Get the 25-06

here's the skinny whren considering a rifle/cartridge for a youngster

          257R v. 25-06

shooting the same grain bullet (i.e. 85 gr pill) , the 257R is approx. 200 fps slower yet utilizes 10 less grs. of powder

the 257 is pretty efficient and ideal for coyotes, TX white tail , and pronghorn

the 25-06 will be faster , yet at a premium with more recoil and more powder burned

IMO, the 257 Ackley Improved is the cats meow

            Ditto what Blake said.

Especially on the 257 AI if you reload.

OR, you might consider the 260 Remington.

Another advantage of the 257 Rob or the 260 is you will still get full performance in barrels 18-20" long whereas you will need a longer barrel to get the best performance out of the 25-06.

An Encore with an 18-20" barrel makes for a very light, very compact and quick handling rifle.

25-06 is what i would go with. as far as recoil i believe it all depends on the balance of the gun. i also dont think the 25-06 has much recoil, my wife shot mine and killed a deer and a turkey while she was 7 months pregnant.

I bought my wife a .257 Roberts and it is a sweet round. I shot both my bucks this year with it and didn't even pick my rifle up. Hardly any recoil any I laid a 180lb buck down at 187 yds. Yet to have a deer take a step after the 257 hit them. I shoot a, I mean my wife shoots a 117gr hornady an it's is bad to tha bone.

I own both and if you reload either will work greaat. Buying ammo the 25 is alot more readily available. The 257 is alot more efficient and you can load it with whatever grain bullet you want to reduce the recoil. with a 100 grain bullet my wifes gun doesnt have much. The 25 I shoot is loaded hot with 117's and still doesnt have much recoil. Both are excellent Texas whitetail guns and you wont go wrong with either..

As long as you handload, I'd go with the Roberts for the daughter. The .25-06 won't give you much more performance in the same bullet weights to offset the greater recoil it offers over the Roberts. You should be able to run a 100gr bullet about 3100fps in the Roberts, and it works fine for any game in Texas IMHO.

                          They're both pretty good rounds...

however, I think you'll find the Roberts is alot milder than the 25/06. I have Roberts in a Winchester Model 70 and I can load it up to 3000 fps with 100 gr. bullets or use the 80 gr. Barnes TSX and get a little more. The recoil will be alot less for her, even with 120 gr. bullets.

I have plenty of brass for the 257 as in probally 200 plus rounds. I got alot of 25 bullets when I bought all the reloading stuff a few weeks ago with the 25/06 brass and dies. So I am set to go either way but it sounds like I will go with the 257 since I can get the accuracy out of the shorter barrel which will make a difference for my lil girl. I have a 270, 30-30, 223, and the boss lady shoots a 300 WSM. so baby girl will have plenty of choices to move up later as well.
