all i do is in the summer time i give them bottled water. No need in them passing out from heat exhaustion but i am not going to contribute to their habits.

My great grandfather was a lutheran pastor. During the depression lots of people would come to his church looking for handouts. He had a pile of rocks outside the church. He would make them move the pile to the other side of the lawn, then feed and clothe them. He was a strong believer in "he who does not work, neither shall he eat."

In high school I saw a homeless guy outside mcds asking for money for food. I went in and bought him a meal. He turned it down and said he only wanted cash for food. I've never offered to help a homeless guy since.

Offer the vast majority of them food or work for food or work for money and 99.99% will reject the offer, all they want is money, no work, no food, just the cold hard cash. Sort of reminds you of Congrees don't it?

Have had the same thing happen several times till about 2 months ago a man came up to me with the "gas story" and the "wife and kid" story. He pointed to his car at the pump (with wife and small child). I put in a few dollars and felt better about it.
At least I knew it went for gas and not smokes, drink or drugs.
(of course his gas money may have gone there...)

I guess I'm just jaded. This has been my experience with these vagabonds. In college I worked for a bagel shop. I worked the opening shift, 5 am til I had to leave to make my 8 or 9am class depending on the day. Each morning when I would arrive at my parking spot there was a homeless guy digging in the dumpster. So I thought I'd get him some warm bagels from work the next day. I caught his attention, and he declined. That must be some level of hatred of bagels or he was digging for something else in the dumpster.

2nd scenario. The "family" at the gas station, same sad story, ran outta gas money etc. I chose to buy a Wal- Mart gift card (again it was in a WM parking lot), where I felt the worst they could buy was cigs... but LBK was dry at the time so no booze. I offered the card and they said thanks but no thanks. SO I guess in my world the bad apples have spoiled it for the few.
