What would the cost difference be going this route?

Cows are the main problem but would really like to keep the pigs out as well.

I use panles. they are easy to set up. But we have no cows.

I use three strands of barbed wire and it keeps the cows out just fine. Main thing is to build your pens big enough that the spin caster doesn't throw the corn outside the fence. If the cows don't get started eating the corn then I never had a problem and we've had cattle on our lease the whole 15 years that I've been there.
IMHO Smart's pictures show exactly what not to do. Pen is way too small.

Barbed wire may be cheaper up front, but for sake of time spent building the pen and success rate, I would go with the hog panels. I've been using them for many years now, with cameras on the feeders (since the 35mm days). Very rarely will we see a hog get into a feeder pen with hog panels around it. If you go with the panels, place the smaller openings on the bottom to prevent the piglets from getting in.

I used cattle pannel cut in half and then a very tight strand of four prong barb wire. the panels by themself will not keep cows out.

barb wire itself will not keep pigs out imho. I think you need both.

If I were you I would get 34" tall field fencing from tractor supply. Put a T-post every 10' and get the fence nice and tight. Go with 2 strands of barb wire across the top for the cows.

I have this exact set up on 3 feeders (with the exception of barb wire) on 3 feeders. We had cows get into our lease and they busted into my feed pen. I put one strand of barb wire and that kept them out. We only had about 10 head of cattle in there, but they did a lot of damage. My pens are about 275-300' in circumference.

I am sure panels work better than field fencing, but the fencing will keep the hogs out. At least that has been my experience.

The hog panels are worth their weight in gold Clint. I've used those and had no problems with cows or pigs or sheep.

A Tight barb fench in a circle? that will be hard to do without a lot of braceing. Gotta go with panels

I prefer the 16" cattle panels at 48" and I'll cut them down to 42"....they are cheaper than hog panels as well..

                            Smart,

I had the same problem as you. Then I made my pens much bigger. Noticed if they can lean over it and reach the corn slung way out from the motor they will lean and lean till they push it down. Just a thought...

Im using 3 strands of barbed wire, to keep the cattle out, but our protein feeders are 'on-demand' instead of broadcast feeders. The spouts are too high off the ground for most hogs. Been working pretty well. When you do catch a big hog on camera getting on his back legs to get at the spout, you sitbout there and kill it! Lol!

                                Wont work.

If you are trying to make it cheap, I dont understand why you are feeding protein. You will spend way more on protein than fencing if you feed the right amount. Never pays to be cheap.
