I have shot thousands of rounds through my 870. Only problem from mine is with fiocchi texas white wing special shells. And every gun I put em in they get stuck. Mine is a 12 gauge 870 express supermag. It just sits in my safe now tho

No its not I have a rem 870 and have shot thousands of shells through it with no problem. Winchester ammo def has issues but not enough cause issues every single time. You can try diff ammo but I don’t think that is the only issue, I think a heart to heart with Remington will solve the issue. Academy has a no return policy on firearms. If you push Remington will make it right in the end. I would not recommend changing things on the firearm it will void the warranty and should not be necessary, the 870 is a tride and true gun it should not be having such a repeated issue something is not right.

Is it weird that I should be required to do that much work on a new gun just to get it to function properly? Like I said, I'm not much of a gun guy. Is this normal?
I used to be one of the owners of Shotgunworld.com and this question came up, literally, once a week. Believe me this is the answer to your question.
BTW I'll be in Houston area Wed/Thur if you want to drive down and have me to show you how to do the chamber polishing.Last edited by jlptexashunter; 03-13-2011, 09:40 PM.

hmmm im not an expert either, but i noticed this happen before to an 870..... then i noticed that the guy shooting it was pretty gentle with the action while ejecting.... i told him to be a little harder on the gun(ie give the slide a little more force while ejecting) and he didnt have anymore problems....

I will not be able to make it to Houston, but I truly appreciate your offer and your advice. I think I can preform the modification you recommended. I do have one question. How deep down the barrel should I drill/polish?

I have 2 870s, and and they both have thousands of rounds down them, and multiple types of barrells and I have never had a single issue that was mechanical. The main rounds I use are the winchester super X dove loads and they work fine. I think the polishing of the chamber is a great suggestion, the finish on the 870 is prone to rust, and just because it is new does not mean that is doesnt have spots of rust in places you can't see. Once you get this thing running, you will love it, it is a great shotgun.

I don't think they've outsourced the barrel manufacturing. It's just the 870 Express is made to a price point and Remington is not going to spend the time/money to do everything they do to the 870 Wingmaster so, the fit/finish just aren't as refined.
As for the chamber put the 0000 steel wool in the first 2.5" of the barrel.
Type this into google: polish remington 870 chamber site:shotgunworld.com
Someone has pics out there if you don't get what I'm talking about.Last edited by jlptexashunter; 03-13-2011, 10:41 PM.

Just my two cents but if I bought a gun new and it was having problems you can bet I would be talking to a rep from that company until the problem was corrected. Especially if I sent it to the company and got it back still not fixed. In fact at that point I would probably be a little hot about it. If I were you I would be sending that gun back again.

Why? You can fix the problem yourself in 5 minutes. It's a simple matter of math and frustration.

I bought a newer 870 and was having the same problem. I tried cleaning the gun thoroughly (on numerous occasions), and tried the new ammo too. Was still having the same exact problem.
What i found with mine was that the spent shell was hanging on the front part of the "clip" that is part of the ejector plate. I just took my pocket knife (all i had with me in the field that day) and gave the "clip" portion of the ejector plate a bit of a push to straighten it out (i.e. even it up with the rest of the ejector plate so that it was a smooth transition). Haven't had another problem with it since. You might give this a try.
Let me know if you need a more clear description of what I am talking about.
