    Remington 870 - Won't Eject

First let me say that I'm not super gun savvy, but I know many of you are. I'm looking for some advice.

My wife bought me a 870 and it won't eject the spent shells. It may fire one or two rounds, but then it will get jammed by the spent shell.

I sent it off to Remington in December to get it repaired and just got it back on Thursday. On saturday I went out to test it and it only fired one round before it jammed again.

I've made sure I'm using the right ammo and I've cleaned the gun.

What's my next step? What would you do if this was your gun?

I'm going in to speak with the manager at Academy (where the gun was purchased) tomorrow. I'm hoping he will exchange it for a new one, but if he doesn't I need a backup plan.

Mine has done this before. It seems to really only do it with Winchester shells. Federal or Remington and I'm fine. Before you rack it back, slide the foregrip forward. That always helped when it was happening to me. It's not a cleaning issue...I had mine cleaned and freshly lubed when it happened. I was on the trap range and it happened all day. I'm going to avoid winchester shells from now on.

With some research, a lot of other people have had problems with low brass Winchester universal just like I did. Is that what you were shooting?

get another box of shells, different brand and see if the scenario is exactly the same.

Had the same problem. So I just changed ammo and haven't had another problem since.

Yup different ammo should help. My extrema 2 was ripping those winchesters in half. Well pulling the brass from the plastic. Leaving the plastic chambered. Thats fun to get out!

Got the same problem with my 870 express. It's not the ammo. I've shot every brand out there from low brass to high velocity steel shot to bismuth. It all will hang up the spent shell till the brass cools down. I've taken mine to a gunsmith (supposedly reputable) and he tried telling me it was the "cheap" brass shells from walmart. The same shells will cycle through my 11-87 and a Mossburg pump without issues at all. My next move is to take it to a metal shop and have them open up the chamber just a smidge with emory cloth or something along that lines.

I have had this exact same problem with Winchester shotgun shells. I am a big fan of Winchester rifle bullets but I won't buy their shotgun shells. Federal or Remington shotgun shells only for me.

Thanks for all the info. I have been shooting Winchester shells. I didn't think it was a problem because I've shot them through other shotguns without a problem.

I'll try something else and see of that fixes it.

mine did this once after i chambered some shells that had gotten moisture on them. ended up, the chamber had some rust build up. whenever i would shoot, the rust seemed to grab the shells. anyway, had to uses some steel wool on the chamber. no problems since.

                          POLISH THE CHAMBER!!!!

Go to Home Depot and get some 0000 Steel Wool
                          Grab your drill
                          Take your barrel off
Attach your cleaning rod to your drill and put a 10 gauge brush in the rod. Rap 0000 Steel Wool around the brush in a thin layer. Spray 0000 Steel Wool liberally with gun oil.
Insert into chamber and run your drill for about 3 or 4 minutes wide open.

You should be good to go now

I used to work in the gun department at Academy and I can tell you that there is a 99% chance that they will not swap you for a new gun. I would try the steel wool and oil.

Hopefully, changing the ammo will work. If not, I will follow your instructions.

Is it weird that I should be required to do that much work on a new gun just to get it to function properly? Like I said, I'm not much of a gun guy. Is this normal?
