Wow this thread is Confusing! Maybe Im just tired!

So you can own one just cant buy one from a ffl.

But a private seller can sell you one even if your under 21?

And you cant buy ammo for it till your 21. from a store but I guess you could privately.

But you as a private seller cant sell ammo to a guy under 21?

And you cant get your CHL till your 21.

          Right??

There its settled. Im a private owner. I will sell you a pistol and ammo. Then you can go spend four years in the military and get your chl. But by then you will be 23 and can get it regardless of military service!

Peace out you ship out soon!

Correct. I think you can obtain the ammo through private sales. You can also buy the ammo if it can be used in a rifle as well.

Many laws have age limits that only pertain to that law. You are criminally an adult in Texas at 17 but civilly at 18 and you can't buy alcohol legally until you are 21. You can get life in prison for murder at 17 but can't legally buy cigarettes until you are 18.

So it is with firearms. There are different ages for different laws. To buy a handgun from an FFL you need to be 21 years old. To have one that does not come from an FFL you need to be 18 years old although you have to have someone 21 years old buy your ammo.

                      Under Texas law:

Sec. 46.06. UNLAWFUL TRANSFER OF CERTAIN WEAPONS. (a) A person commits an offense if the person:
                      (2) intentionally or knowingly sells, rents, leases, or gives or offers to sell, rent, lease, or give to any child younger than 18 years any
                      firearm, club, or illegal knife;

From the ATF Frequently Asked Questions pages:

Q: To whom may an unlicensed person transfer firearms under the GCA? A person may sell a firearm to an unlicensed resident of his State, if he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law.

But who is able to lawfully receive a firearm by age?

Q: May a parent or guardian purchase firearms or ammunition as a gift for a juvenile (less than 18 years of age)?
Yes. However, possession of handguns by juveniles (less than 18 years of age) is generally unlawful. Juveniles generally may only receive and possess handguns with the written permission of a parent or guardian for limited purposes, e.g., employment, ranching, farming, target practice or hunting.

The ATF pages note that it is illegal for a person UNDER 18 years old from possessing a handgun without written permission from a parent. No mention of 18 or older anywhere on their page as far as age.

Looking at the ATF pages it seems to make it clear that a person under 18 is restricted from possessing a handgun but not 18 or older.

So can I legally carry a handgun while I'm bowhunting if I'm not trying to conceal it?

nope, you cant carry a handgun during archery only season without a concealed handgun liscense. General season your fine from the sounds of it but not archery only
