    Am I crazy ?

ok.. so a few years back , i got tired of the increasing prices for deer leases and all the rules associated with using someone else's property , so I bought my own place .. it's only 100 acres , but it's next to a 2300 acre wildlife preserve .. so there is decent game ! we have deer, pigs, turkeys and dove ... anyways ... here comes the question.. I have a friend (he's also fellow TBH ..).. and for the last couple of years , i've let him hunt on my place for free! in returns , he's helped me with building a camp , clearing trees , filling feeders , etc .. I'm sure seeing lots of posts on this site for big $ amount for deer leases .. people are willing to pays thousands of dollars for a lease , or hunderds for weekend turkey or hog hunts ... so am I crazy for letting him hunt for free ?

here's a pic of his deer he took 2 seasons ago...

That's more a personal question. If it was just me hunting it and i had a good friend who was helping me out. I'ld definately let him hunt it for free with me. As long as he went along with my game management program.

Sounds like he's kinda earned his hunts, if he's done all the help you say he has! He's your friend, enjoy the time together! I wouldn't give him free range of the place, but would definitely let him hunt!

Money seems to change the whole deal.

There are usually expectations that come with money.

This! My family up north think I'm the crazy one paying someone else to hunt on their land...my family in WV usually just ask the landowner's permission and save a backstrap off of each deer for the owner. No fees, no rules, just hunting

I had a friend who had a ranch around Falfurrias. He did the same with me, he just want to share what he was blessed with. Nothing says that you can't charge others and let your friend hunt for free. You are a good friend, he is a lucky guy. Need any more friends? lol

Why would you charge a friend to hunt on your place?.....especially one that has putting in a bunch of work for you?

And, more importantly, why would you, knowing he is a member on TBH and probably reads, ask this question on the forum and post a picture of him? It's almost like I get the feeling you are trying to make it a point to show him how lucky he is....

Not Crazy just a good guy.

What you have going is the barter system and while it doesnt equal up so nicely like money I'd say your coming up ahead.

100 acres isnt much therefore you would be hard pressed to find someone to pay alot to hunt it.

If he is doing all this work, think if you were paying him hourly to do it. Draw it up: Pay him minnimum wage for a few months on paper and see how much you are really saving!

not crazy at all. myself and 2 buddies got our lease last year and a couple other really good buddies were always going out of town for training so we didn't even charge them to hunt but they like your buddy did a lot of work on the lease when they were around.

He's paying in labor. If it's just you and him and he's doing a lot of work, why not let him hunt for free? You're just being a good friend and he's paying you back with what's easiest for a man to give, a helping hand.
