If you are only going to work the dog Andes times a year don't get a jagd. Mine gets mad if he goes more than 10'days or so without work. Sometimes I shoot things just to let him work

Every dog has the nose to track deer, that's not the question. The question is what the dog will do when a rabbit jumps a foot in front of them or they cross a fresh hot deer trail. Will they stay on the cold 10 hour old track or lead you astray?

Tracking only, or are there other desireable traits you want in your dog. For instance will you use this dog to hunt other things? Do you need a dog that is house, or family friendly? What sort of lifestyle and time do you have to invest in the dog?

          Lots of things to consider.

Depends on the dog more than the breed, its just some breeds are better known for using the old factory. If he has the nose and the prey drive , along with other factors, you bet. I too have a Lacy and a cur like others on here and Playa makes a great point which is why I use the dogs I do, versatility at other gaming needs.

            Also important to note,
The Lacy's and curs can catch and hold a wounded deer as well. Not sure about the speed of the shepard but if he ever caught it, might be fun to watch.

What ever decision you make, I caution to get them from a reputable breeder. All Lacys, shepards and any other dog for that matter are not created equal. Darn shame to get a dog to find out it was bred to close or wrong and not socialize and you have health or behavioral problems. Homework....

I say a JRT is the best bet. They are high energy and have a great nose. They are also pocket sized which makes them a hardy breed with longevity

Just don't get one that looks like the bottom picture

It would have to be a good family dog too. Are lacy's good family dogs?

I know of a man that uses JRT's to track his deer on his King Ranch Lease. Uses radio collars. These dogs are something else. I have Cur's and a new Lacy but the JRT's are cool too. His will take off tracking and he will just leave them out there. A couple of his dogs went out one night and got out of range. They went back to the house and came back out the next morning and there were the dogs. Happens a lot. Tuff little dudes. Only issue I see is holding a wounded one thats still very much alive, but it wouldnt be from lack of determination on the JRT's part. Man their tuff.....

Depends on how they're bred. My brother had one that he paid quite a bit for, but it apparently came from a not so good breeding stock. His, plus several others out of the same litter, were very unsociable, territorial, and all around mean. He snaps at people and other dogs for no reason, just when they walk past him.

All you Blue Lacy owners.....Are they good family dogs as well? Good with kids? I have heard they need room to roam and are not good in back yards. I am out in the country 2-3 days a week but in town the other days for work. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If you get a high energy dog (Terrier/ Lacy/ Cur) they need to work or they can get cranky. Mine is cranky right now as he has not been on a animal in almost a month. My kids run him and play with him but I can tell he wants to work. Maybe this week Ill go shoot a to let him work. I know Ill get thrown under the bus for this but for you guys thinking of getting a tracking dog- sometimes you will have to go out and liver shoot a hog so the dog can work- after the shot make lots of noise and push the hog you just shot so it runs. My dog wont really work a drag or mock trail anymore.
