It'll shoot a 140gr bullet flatter to 1,000 yards than a 300 win mag without much recoil. If you are going to be plinking for fun then recoil might be a consideration. My 300 win mag shoots nice, but it weighs close to 15lbs or more. I've never shot the 338 lapua, but everyone I've talked to says you have to have a muzzle brake on it. Have fun with whatever you decide.
ive had a 6.5x284 for years, the "pearflat" model built here in texas.. it never fails to amaze me, it makes me look and feel like a rifleman when really im a hacker!!!
i did contemplate a 50 and a 338lm when i got my first oil check, for critter sniping off the porch in the evening while drinking whiskey but the i decided to just keep my 6.5x284 and buy a custom 220 weatherby rocket..

if ya get that 338 pm me i got a 1500yd+ range and plenty of critters, id like to see what she'll do

Its really a nightmare between a divorce and taxes, BUT give a un-educated redneck some foldin money and cool things happen

Savage is making some great guns now with the AccuTrigger. As above said it is chambered in the .338 Lapua. Not to bad on the cost for the quality. I have the 10FLCP chambered in a .308. I was a spotter in the USMC for a sniper from 93'-97' so I am very fond of this caliber rifle. I have taken shots out to +1000 yds and have had great succes with it.
As you said you have done your homework on the cost so GO For IT.....
