Introduction / Newbie needs some advice

    Hi everybody,

My name is Oliver, I am from Germany.
I'm shooting bows since about four years, my current bow is a PSE X-Force HF, 29", 70#.

While I'm doing OK with the bow, I have no hunting experience at all.
All I know about hunting is theoretical or from the 'International Bowhunter Education Program (IBEP)' course, which I did 1.5 years ago.

My wife and I went to the Big Bend Ranch in Texas four weeks ago, during our vacation and greatly enjoyed our stay there. Because of this experience, the friendly hunters we met there and this forum here, I thought that Texas might be a good starting point for my hunting career.

I would like to get into hunting and therefore could use some advice on where and when to go, how to prepare myself and especially if this idea makes any sense at all, as I can spend only one or two days for hunting during our next vacation.

As I have no experience yet, I will need a place where I get some advice and where somebody is available to help me field dress the (hopefully) harvested animal. A guided hunt might also be of interest. I have no specific idea of what I would like to hunt. The only trophy I am currently interested in, is the hide.
Therefore, hunting boars or javelinas would be absolutely fine with me.

We are pilots and will travel with a plane, so that a ranch with an airstrip would be most convenient. Horse back riding is another thing we like to do, this and the airstrip are however just optional.

Do you think it makes sense for a newbie to start off with only one or two days of hunting? I saw that there are many recommendations for hunting ranches in the forum - which could you specifically recommend to a newbie?

I am looking forward to your answers.

    Cheers,

    Oliver

welcome to the fire!!! i dont have any experience with day lease, guided type hunts so im no help recommending one. i do all my hunting on a family lease or private property. but it does sound like your best bet would be for an inclusive guided hunt. for a first trip out, i would do as many days as reasonable. it would give you many sittings with a guide to judge animals, watch their behavior, discuss shot placement in different situations. have plenty of time so you do not feel rushed and a need to take an animal before your 1-2 days is over.

Welcome and I think you're on the right track with a guided hunt given your limited amount of time.

Good luck and keep us posted on your adventures.

                  Welcome.

Sit down and write all the questions down that you would like answered about hunting, all of them. Then when you have the chance, put them in a thread on here and you will get more answers than you can imagine. This is the best bowsite on the net and the people aren't bad either.

As far a going hunting for your first time, a guided hunt would be the best as all you normally have to do is listen to the guide and do the killing. The rest is taken care of by the guide. There are a lot of different animals to hunt in TX and a lot can be done on a year round basis such as the exotics we have.

                    Welcome to the fire!

Guided hunts allow to hunt instead of spending your limited time scouting, filling feeders and that kind of stuff. Just get in the stand the guide puts you in and wait.

I would start out at diamond c ranch hunting for a hog. Great ranch and you will see hogs. Pretty cheap for your first hunt. It is located about 35 mins from abeline and I know they have an airport so that would workout. Texasbowhunt.com

                          Howdy and welcome!

Any of the highly recommended day leases would be a good place to start your hunting career. I recommend Diamond C as well. It is located near Caddo, Texas (1 hour west of Fort Worth, Texas). There are several airports close to the ranch. I think you could arrange for the ranch manager, Skylar, to pick you up at the airport.

Welcome Oliver! Check out the "Rate the Day Lease" section here at TBH. Lots of great info there with some contact information as well. There are good and not-so-good day leases in the great state of Texas. Whether it is deer, hogs or exotics you do enjoy a distinct advantage by scheduling a hunt during bow season (October) so keep that in mind.
