oof, last time I burned cedar in a fire pit I was sick for a month. Now I light cedar piles and enjoy them from afar.

the only time that mesquite pops when i burn it is when it has (or has had) ants in it.

rubydog--that's the funniest description of mesquite I've heard since I arrived in Texas in '69!! True dat!

The only time I've had trouble with mesquite popping is like above, when it has bugs in it. There's a breed of borer that targets mesquite, then several types of bugs will hit any wood that's been cut and laying out for them to find.

only time it pops is when it has been split..like take a log one foot across and split it up into 4 different sticks of mesquite.....no bugs in it just hard solid red mesquite wood..Andy
