    Burning Mesquite Wood In Fireplace

There is something I have been wondering about for years now. Why is it when mesquite logs are cut up into fire wood then split. They pop in a fireplace shooting fire everywhere across the floor. Iif you don't have a screen in front of fireplace. I have left the logs laying out drying for 4-5 years and still they pop. Should wood be split then dried for several more years????? Or is it to be cut down when sap is down in a tree like now?????

I like mesquite for my fireplace.I was rasied cutting mesquite and burning it in a fireplace. On this place where I live I have Mesquite ,Hickory,Live Oak,Post Oak,and Blackjack. I have a choice of different woods to burn. Most fireplaces can't burn the mesquite due to heat the wood put out unless it is buildt all masonary.I need to go put more wood in fireplace.....Andy

I've never put it in the fireplace. Save the mesguite for the bbq. Sounds like a cardinal sin to waste goot pit wood like that.

NO the bbq wood is the dried hard red mesquite knots or the wood that is dried hard no bark still on tree. I have a couple of the large knots that are cut up into 1 ft lenghts and not split yet waiting on pit time .......Andy

Being that you are from Brownfield which is slap dab in the middle of barren ground, I can understand. We happen to live where mesquite trees are like rats and grassburs. We have an over abundance of the stuff and have no choice but to use it in the fireplace.

I am using some mesquite tonight in my fire place. Trying to get rid of a pile I have had in my back yard.

The only mesquite that pops is the split wood ......The closes thing to mesquite I found is hickory but I never split any hickory except once trying to make a bow. Made good bbq wood......Andy

Some mesquite pops a lot, and some not at all.....I have no idea why. Seasoning doesn't seem to affect it either way.

I have always been told that mesquite gets too hot and will ruin a fireplace. Maybe
Dale can chime in on this.

I cut a chord of mesquite at my farm every year and it never pops. Now cedar is like a mini IED.

Love me some mesquite wood in the wood burning stove. I need to get some to carry to the piney woods of east Texas.

Mesquite burns fast and hot. Other than that I don't know why it would be a problem.
