Typically, kids will lose their first knife, I know I did.. Id wait until they are well old enough to know what they are getting before getting him one awesome case (engraved maybe?).

    Just my own opinion though..

I just handed my kids my knife out of my pocket when they were ready and went and bought another one.

My 9 yr old got my old mini gerber with a pocket clip. He thinks he is super cool when he gets to carry around at the lease. But he knows that once we get to the house it goes back on my dresser till the next trip to ensure it doesnt accidently end up at school.

Stress to him the no school thing. Sneaking it to school to show his friends would end badly in the "no tolerance" climate at school these days.

I would opt for one without a pocket clip. Probably better that folks don't know he has it.

X2. I would always sneak mine to school but today it's different.

yes it would. my first knife was my cub scout knife and I still have a scar on my pinkie where it closed up on me.

I went with a Kabar lockblade. Inexpensive, but sturdy.
I say go for bright colors. Easier to locate when it gets lost.
That goes for all youth equipment.

Ours stay in the hunting backpacks until we get to the ranch.

Victorinox Adventurer. Light weight, well built, locking blade, very visible handles.

Lock back for sure. O have 2 mini stockmans for my son but they are in the safe for a few more years.

I would get a case first then a Moore Maker when he is older.

I'd always give him hand me downs (regardless of how long before he loses it). Eventually he'll not lose it and in 30 years he can say "My dad gave me this. It used to be his." Maybe I'm sentimental!

I agree about the importance of a locking blade. My first knife -I was about 10 - was the Classic Boy Scout model . A great first knife otherwise, but I just about cut my index finger off when the blade folded over. Dad took it away from me for about 6 months...

I got my 10yo a small lock blade from Lowes and he lives it.

Make it a CASE or OLD TIMER. They are the best, IMO, hands down.
