first pocketknife for a my 9 year old nephew?

my nephew is ready to carry a pocket knife. he's been reading some of these books that advocate "old time" ways for boys (I think the book is called "The Dangerous Book for Boys") and he wants to carry a pocket knife! kudos to the author - sounds like we need more of these books!

so ... anybody got a suggestion on a good first knife? is nine years old too young for a knife?

he won't be able to carry it to school but he can carry it other places. any other suggestions about a boy and his first knife?

Any of the swiss or Victorinox knives would be good. Kids love gadgets

              Swiss Army knife.

Typically, kids will lose their first knife, I know I did.. Id wait until they are well old enough to know what they are getting before getting him one awesome case (engraved maybe?).

              Just my own opinion though..

yes, he has a fine father. but the outdoor world is my turf so I get to help the boy out with this sort of stuff. and I'm not complaining!

Buck Lite. $7 at Academy. My boy loves his!

Get him something nicer, but keep it until he can avoid losing it.

A locking knife would probably save some blood.

I found my old timer mini stockman the other day, that I think I got when I was 10. It's a carbon knife and was EXTREMELY rusted......refurb is in progress.

A hand me down was my first. Old three blade schrade. Lost it once on the creek bank..neighbor kinfolk that we fished with found it! I still have it to this day. Prolly 30-somethin years old!

I agree with several things. Go somewhat cheap since the odds of him losing it are pretty good. I would also go with a locking blade for safety. I would also like to add it might be good to get him a knife with a good safety on it. That way it only opens when he wants it to open and it takes a little effort. I carry a SOG Twitch II for this reason. I never know when one of my boys (2 and 5) are going to pick it up and mess with it (when I don't have it in my pocket). I don't want them to be able to open it. I know most SOG pocket knives have good safeties and they make good stuff (although this somewhat goes against the cheap sugguestion). I also know the Kershaw Chive has a decent safety on it.
