Based on how many 9 mm I have shot into a water tank:
Some break apart and most don't. Most HP will deform and once they deform, they lose forward movement. I have found the Speer Gold Dot to be consistently a round that will not deform and stay true to form, which results in better pentration. Just my two cents worth based on what I have observed at work.

This is my personal opinion today and subject to change as new information becomes available.
