Yup, another vote for suck it up.
Your family will understand, and the paycheck sure is nice.
I loved working shutdowns when I was still wearing my tools; especially industrial facilities.
When else do you get to make so much bank, get so much done in such a short amount of time, and work with the coolest materials and machinery there is? I love bending GRC, ARC, Plastibond and the like.
Food plants are tough, but it's pretty rewarding when you throw the switch and see your work powering it all up.
The company that I work for has been pretty fortunate through this economy, but we haven't had any opportunity to put our guys on any kind of super overtime project like that.

Here is my take. It's a shutdown. Don't know if you're there temporarily or work there permantely.
If you are there just for the shutdown, take off for Christmas. You can bet most the others will as well. If your boss doesn't like it, the next shutdown is just right around the corner!!!
If you are there on a full time basis, then the decision is up to you. Maybe see if yall can work a shorter day to spend some time with the family.
I, myself am in the middle of a shutdown at the plant where I work, but we are still gettin to have off Fri thru Sun!!!
I'm not going to tell ya to suck it up. In life, money isn't everything!!!
