I think it sucks but I doubt you want to be getting on un-employment anytime soon. I would say suck it up and look forward to those fat checks!

It sucks, but it's still better than the alternate check you could be getting from Obama!

I will admit it stinks! A Lot!! But, the right thing to do is sit your family down and explain the situation, and then report to work!! There is a reason for this and that is the attitude you have to keep! Your family will understand and love you for making the hard decision and when that decision helps put food in the mouths of your little one and wife! I believe thats the right decision!! But, I will stand with you on the fact that "It Sucks"! But, remember a man has to do the hard things sometimes and if you have children it will be a great example to show them that a responsibility sometimes conflicts with our "Wants"! God Bless You and your family this holiday season!! Just my .02

Owning my electrical business is very tough. I have always tried to work around family stuff for any of my employees. Work is to tough to come by right now and telling a customer that we can't because my employees already made plans for the holidays wouldn't work. I also promise you that there are several qualified people out there that would work it if you didn't want to.

And most of the time, the DH knows he is but sometimes couldn't change it if he wanted to. The DH above him makes sure of that.

He would not be salary either. Against the law for somebody that produces something with their hands to be anything other than hourly.

Suck it up and do what you have to. 100 hours a week means plenty of overtime!!!

Do your job. Plenty of people out there looking for a job if you get tired of doing yours.

Shut up, quit your whining and go to work, you could well be in the unemployment line or worse having already exceeded your benefits like millions of other people today.

I refuse to do that anymore over the holidays. an off weekend ever once in a while no biggie. but 16 hour days over the holidays? no thanks...

after re-reading it. I see they are just now telling you about it? and you had prior plans with family. I would tell them I have plans with the family and will be attending those plans and will come in for my normal work day. Thats what I would do, but then again I have other things I can go make money doing and loosing my current job would not put my family out a whole lot. I would just start some upcoming things a little earlier than expected.

but, now isnt the time to risk loosing a job either if you have nothing else to fall back on.

If my for example my wife brought home enough to cover the bills while I looked for a job I would "get fired". collect unemployment while looking for a new job.

I'll tell you what I tell my friends and family. I have to work holidays all the time, and when I have to work I'm missing the whole day, 24 hours. Suck it up and go to work. Of course, I'm off the next day and the day before, so gatherings can be scheduled on those days, and it doesn't sound like you're going to have that option, other than to postpone your family stuff for a few weeks. My better half is without a job right now due to some BS that happened at her NEW job, the one she quit a perfectly good job to take. Trust me, it SUCKS. You don't want to be unemployed in this market. Unemployment benefits aint enough and they have a limited time span, but if you get fired, that makes finding a new job even harder since there ae countless qualified workers who didn't get fired from their last job for failing to come to work. Lots of folks around who were great employees, but just got laid off because the company wasn't making enough to keep them on. Their resume/reference list will look better than yours if you get fired because you refused to work your assigned shift, and trust me, that's how it will be reported when they call your previous employers. Unemployment may be hard to get too, since you were fired for just cause. Go to work and hope next year is better.

If I were not hurting and KNEW I could find work elsewhere I'd tell him to bit me. Otherwise ya gotta tough it out and do what's tight for the family. i.e. Make $.

go to work, put a smile on your face and be thankful you have a job. I would assume with plant work like this, it is somewhat expected to have to pull double duty to get things done. just like it is stated before, its done this way only because they have to. I am sure the upper ups would you rather spend time with your family too! Good luck and be a great example for your family and your co-workers!

If I was salaried I'd be upset. However; if I was getting overtime I'd be jumping for joy!
