    Remington Mohawk 600, .243

I have one that I got when I was 10yrs old and have shot several deer with in my younger days. I was contemplating selling it but since my girlfriend is starting to get into hunting, I figured I would get it out and get it set up for her. So I pulled it out and remembered somewhere that they had a recall on the trigger or something? So best I can tell, mine hasn't been fixed. I guess I just need to take it to a gunsmith and have them work on it? Any ideas on what that will cost? Would it be covered by Remington?

I did shoot it at the range and could tell the trigger is very heavy, so will need to get it done either way. Also, couldn't get it to group very well at all but I would think with that little short barrel, might just be something you deal with? I have a low power Leupold on there, ended up taking that off and ordered a Vortex Viper thats going to go on there, I think if I get that trigger fixed and get a good quality scope on there, I will probably hold on to it.

that shortness of barrel isn't the prob with accuracy. Those barrels are pretty stiff. My 600 in 6mm is a tack driver. Many years ago I cut the stock off for my wife/kids to shoot. Now it's my kid loaner rifle. I'll bet 20 different kids have killed their first deer with that rifle.

Mine stil has the original trigger, check with Remington to see what needs to be done with yours.

Yea...what skeeter said!...but to me! Just call a gunsmith and give him the serial number and they should be able to see if it was a recall or not. Shouldn't cost you anything...mine didn't.

Trigger job ought to be less than $100, and a glass bedding job around $150. That, plus a quality scope and some good sandbags will help tons. Also, take the time to buy and assortment of ammo to test. Rifle barrels are like guys and beer (or archers and bows)---each has its favorite.

Short barrel won't have any impact on accuracy but if the muzzle/crown has been dinged, that will. Gunsmith can recut the crown too--for less than $50.

My daughter just killed her first buck with one in 243 full sized stock and all she is 5. Did it all by herself.

I have one just like it, and got it at about same age as you. I love the little shooter. I will always keep it.

Here, here...took my first deer with a Mohawk 600 chambered in 6mm...Mason has taken a deer with it. My dad bought it at Carter's Country in the 70's for less than $100...countless deer have fallen to it. It now belongs to Mason and sits in my safe. GREAT rifles, especially in a box blind due to the short barrel.

I've got a .243 Remington Mohawk 600 that my dad bought me when I was about 9-10 years old. He had a couple of inches cut off the stock, and a kick pad added. Remington did have a recall on the safety, but mine just missed the recall per the serial number.
I hand load for mine, and it was picky about what load it likes to shoot. My dad has a .243 in Remington model 788 and his likes a particular power and bullet combination with 44.0 grains of powder. My Mohawk likes the same load, but likes 43.0 grains of the same powder. My Mohawk also has a very tight chamber, about 1/2 the ammo we reloaded and full length re-sized will not chamber in my rifle, but they all chamber in his. One day I need to try to figure out why.

I'm gonna figure out if it was in the recall or not and have it worked on and put that Vortex on there and hold on to it. I shot my first deer with it in 1985, not too many folks can say they still have the first rifle they ever shot a deer with.

If you want some help making her shoot let me know. I have a Mohawk that was given to me by my Dad as well and understand what that means. My oldest son has taken every deer he has killed with same gun. Mine is a tack driver that has only had trigger work but I can help with bedding etc if needed and have a home range for testing loads.
