I went there my first time and learned pretty good. Went at spring break that year and there was not much snow. I have been back since and there was a lot of snow. Nice friendly place, yes lots of TEXAS plates there. You will have fun, remember to relax and you will be fine. Have fun, wished my family and I were going.

Great little town. We went there for a "snow white" Christmas about 18 years ago. It snowed when we arrived, the entire time we were there and even on the way out. Easy slopes for sure, but that makes it fun for the family. My 5 year old picked it up faster than me.
I sorta had this fear of turning my 225 lb frame pointing skis downhill, but hey, thats just me.

Red River is the town in New Mexico that is most like Texas. Everybody there is a Texan. Way more friendly than most of the rest of the state, and they don't say "you guys" all the time.Skiing is good, especially for beginners. Angel Fire is good for beginners too, and sometimes has better snow. It's bigger, as far as the ski area goes. Lots more to do in town in Red River. Don't ski at Taos until you know how to ski. It is LOTS more difficult. An intermediate slope (blue) at Taos is the same as an expert slope at Red River, and Taos has slopes that go up to double black diamond passed there. It'll kick your tail, but they have Colorado-type snow at Taos. The base at Taos is about the same elevation as the summit at Red River.
If you like western art, go by Kenneth Wyatt's gallery in Red River. He's from Tulia, my home town, and he's a very good artist. Lots of the people in his paintings are people that I grew up with. Makes it kinda cool if you recognize faces. http://www.kennethwyatt.com/

It would be worth it to get some quality skis. Cheap skis and even poor upper end skis are unstable and you could fall. Better skis will hold an edge and make it fun.
Don't ski the trees or on the edges until you are in control...
Some point them downhill and don't know how to control it or stop, ends up ugly.
You'll have a blast!

My father-in-law owns a lodge up there. It is a home away from home for us. Eat at Texas Reds if you get a chance. Timbers is ok as well. Cheap chow found at Shotgun Willies. Red River is also very close to Taos Ski Valley. This is where I do most of my skiing when there is fresh snow. Red River does have lots of snow making and the new lift is fast. Just don't get in a hurry up there. They don't work on the same time schedule as most of us. Pretty laid back for sure. Have fun.

Never been sking there but have been to Red River many times in the summer. Here is our snowmoble trip from last winter. Great time, be sure and do the night snomoble trip up the ski slopes. We drove up there last winter on 3 inches of ice. From OKC to almost the NM state line was solid ice on the road. Took almost 11 hours to make an 8.5 hour drive.

Red River is a great little ski area and cool town too. The only problem with NM is you just never know what the snow is gonna be like. If they have good snow then you will have a blast. If not it may get a little frustrating. If this is your first time i would suggest at least a 1/2 day lesson on the first day. It will probably save you a lot of head (and butt) aches.
