Best Rural Internet Service Provider?

I'm wanting to setup internet at the ranch in South Texas and know I'm limited on who or what I can use. Can any of you point me in the right direction? I looked at Hughe's net, and by the way, holy moly they are expensive!

what about tethering off the cell??

I plan on maintaining that option as well. Plus, I did just buy a micro cell for the ranch but you have to have wifi.

Check if there are any "line of sight" providers in the area. You have to be within 35 miles tho. I live 10 miles out and have used one for 4 years, works great and reasonable.

hughes and direct tv are the same folks...it would be nice if they had an option / discount for using both services.

have you tried a verizon mi-fi card we use them on remote job sites and they work well, good thing is you can take it with you

if you have phone service why cant you just get a wireless card? and if the signal is weak get a zboost.

I have "Wild Blue" internet service. It is $50 a month and sloooooow! I'm trying to figure out now if I would be better with a mobile broadband card. Hopefully your thread will uncover a better option for me as well. I'll be watching this one.

HughesNet is terrible. When it did work for me, there is a certain amount that you can download per day and if you go over that amount they drop it back to below dial-up speeds for 3 days. If a program on your computer ever updates by itself, which they all do on a regular basis, you are out of luck for several days. POS! You should be able to look up what options you have in that area. Google internet options for that county and see what it says.

x2 on using a air card. AT&T, Sprint or Verizon wont come out and tell you it is an option but it is and it works well. We have a Verizon card and the lady came out and told us that Sprint had the best air card. I would try all 3 and go with the best one.

We had the same experience with Hughes net.

And good lord.....if you ever have to call their customer service it will end with you trying to pull an Indian guy through the phone line to whup his you know what..Horrible.

By the way, if you go with Hughes...Ive got all the equipment and will send it to ya for free.

My dad travels every day with a Sprint air card and it seems to work well... most places.

I travel with a Verizon card going on five years... no problems thus far. Just like anything, there are some bad spots. Most of the time mine is slightly slower than DSL, but not much
