I use baslitic tips on deer myself and so do most of my friends and family. I don't know of the bullet exploding/lack of penetration problems. Usually leaves a hole the size of a man's fist on the exit wound. Now on elk I use partitions, but on deer and hogs I have had no problem with balistic tips from 270 and 30-06

I shoot Winchester 180 grain, Silver Ballistic Tips, have for years, Every type of animal I've shot with it Drops Right In Their Tracks! Never had to trail one. Huge exit hole, Never a problem with Expansion.

I had the very same problem out of my old cz 30 06. Switched to federal fusion and I got what I wanted. Dead deer and big blood trails. I shoot hornady custom inerlocks in my 300 and it pack a mean punch on whitetails. Out of my 7mag I shoot winchester elite bts and will see how well they work on a deer tomorrow hopefully. I have shot lots of javis with it and it drops em full pass thru but exit is weak. I am a huge fan of hornady ammo and especially the heavy grain interlocks.

if i was shooting a 30-06 i would shoot a 150 or 165 remington core loc. the deadliest mushroom in the woods.

I picked up a box to try out, and my .270 shoots the 130 grain lights out.
I shot a 150-175 lb mule deer with it, and hit him in the shoulder. The bullet destroyed the front shoulder, tore up the insides and was recovered from the other shoulder when quartering it out.
The deer moved about 10 feet from where i shot him to where he went down. Not much blood, but his insides were mush.

Its happened the last 2 shots. Good placement and no exit. I watched her shoot a nice 9 pt this morning and there was not a drop of blood. Found him about 75 yards. Complete destruction of heart. What is recommended
If you want to stick with ballistic tips switch to the 180gr flavor for the 30-06. The heavier ones are quite a bit tougher. The 180's also come out a little slower and don't frag as much when launched out of the 30-06. Less meat damage, consistent exit wounds and better blood trails.

if you want a blood trail then BT are not for you. BT w/ a good shot equals DRT. I have never had a deer or pig go further than 75 yards when using BT. almost never a blood trail. If you make a marginal shot, your screwed because finding the animal won't be easy. I also think BT are teerible for long range kills, 300 or more yards. I never shoot that far so I love BT.

I shoot 150 gr. Winchester XP2 in ballistic tip in my 300 WSM because they group under 3/4'' at 100 yards. I have also had a couple deer that I shot and the round did not exit, but both deer were over 250 yards but still dropped in there tracks shot in the shoulder.

I have used the Barnes bullets for 12 years for deer, hog, elk and wouldn't use anything else. Bullets expand well and retain almost 100% of their weight, no fragments of lead and casings around the wound at all. Almost always have a clean pass through, good blood trail if the animal goes anywhere at all. They make great bullets for muzzleloading as well, Used Nosler partitions before the Barnes and they were OK.
