If I were buying new I would go for a Browning A bolt or a T/C Icon. I am a big fan of the 7-08, so that would be my caliber choice over the .270. Thompson also just came out with a 30TC that is an interesting round, just not sure how it would play out over the course.
Far as glass money again comes into play. Money to burn I would go with Swaro, S&B. On a budget I would go with Nikon.

For what its worth I would not buy a new Remington 700. Few years old one maybe, appears the new ones are not safe.

I am a Ruger guy... Like the old M77's with tang safety, I have several of them that were handed down to me and they were many years old when I got them 10 years ago... They are all tack drivers!!! I really like the wood guns, i am not a fan of the composite stocked guns...

As for glass, your budget will determine that....

Caliber, if I was to only have one rifle for hunting whitetail, pigs, etc... Would be a 25-06, the wife and kids have been shooting this round for a few years now and I have really become a big fan of it!!!

      Good luck in your search...

I believe the BDL has open sights and the CDL does not.

There not alot of difference maybe iron sights, they both have bottom eject shells chambers and are great guns.

I have shott the Rem 700 for many years and it is a great gun but just got a savage and cost less and shoot great also.

happy hunting for the gun thats right for you

This would be my second choice after the 7-08. For a "lifetime" gun your shoulder will appreciate either choice over the .270 in the later years!

For a lifetime gun id try to find a used sako....favorite in my collection, but the cost is higher, i have remington and savage as well, for the money you will not beat a savage in my opinion, buy a used zeiss and a nice savage in the caliber of your choice and youll do it for under a grand

Savage gets my vote too. Then spend the rest of your money on a good nikon scope.

With all the "AR" counties now. I'll be upgrading my scope from a 3X9 to a 4.5x14. I'd like to make sure I can see that hidden 1" point.

If I had to have another bolt action, I would go with ruger m77. I now shoot a tc pro hunter, only because my m77 was stolen when my house was robbed. As for scopes, I purchased mine from the SWFA website off of the sample list. The sample list are scopes that have been returned to the store or that were display models. These are sent back to the manfacturer and checked out then they put them back on the shelf as refurbished. I was able to buy a nikon monarch 4-16x50 with bdc for $150-200 less than bass pro/cabelas.
