    Rifle/Scope Recommendations....

I know this is a bow hunting forum and bowhunting will always be my primary method.

That said, I would like to have a nice "lifetime" rifle...one that's reliable, durable, sharp-looking and drives tacks!

Can anyone recommend a bolt action model of rifle/scope that I can pick up for around $1000 total?

I've always heard that .270 is the best all-around caliber for hill country hunting. I've been looking at the remington model 700, Winchester model 70, Browning x-bolt....all the flagship guns, but I'll need to buy used if I want one of these at my price point.

    your input is greatly appreciated!

i really like the Remingtons. i am a big fan of the Bushnell Elite series scopes also. my preferred round is the 257 Ackley, but you have to reload to shoot it. the 270 is a good round. i would try and find a nice Remington 700 CDL by what you described.

I own my fair share of Remingtons too. But I also own several Savage rifles as well. I will not buy another Remington as long as Savage is still producing guns like they are now. Just my .02. As far as scopes go, I love the Nikons. I have a couple of them on the before mentioned Savages and they are a deadly combination.

I am sold on Savage rifles and cant say enough about them. As far as scopes, i have had good luck with a Simmons Aetec. You should be able to get both for close to 1k

                  Cal. .270 without dought

I'm a fan of the Remington 700 rifles myself, however, a few years back I bought one of the Winchester 70 Classics chambered in .270, for my "now" ex-wife. The Winchester was the best "out of the box" shooter I've ever seen. Using the Federal Premium 130 gr. ammo., I could get a dime sized group with three shots. When we got our divorce I tried my best to trade her anything for that rifle. She wouldn't do it. It's probably rusting in a closet somewhere now. When and if I ever purschase another rifle it will be a Winchester Classic

As far a scope, I like Leupold. They now make a cheaper version of the Leupold called the "rifleman", or something like that. I put one of a rifle a few years ago and it's been great. I think I paid $299 for it. Most my other Leupolds where a little more expensive.

I bought a Winchester Model 70 .270 when I was 16 - 34 years ago. I put a Leupold 3x9 on it. It has served me flawlessly ever since. Although I shot a few rounds through it each year to make sure it hasn't gotten off, I've never had to adjust anything.
There's not a critter in Texas it won't put down.
