            Yes they can and do. they are called Cross Foxes, there are a ton of them in Quebec and Eric will have a hand full of hides from them every year. Do a google search for images of cross fox. They are awesome looking.

                  Wikipedia says "cross foxes" are a color variant of the red fox...black and red color variations. A "silver fox" is also a color variant of the red fox...a melanistic color variation.

                  I found this pic online. All are variations of the red fox.

                      Gerald G. If you look at the over all anatomy of the animal there is NO question to be had of red or grey...
                      Take hair color out of the equation ...I really don't need to look farther than it's head... Very full
                      Muzzle and large head ..... The bones structure of a red is heavier than that of a grey as well.. Look at his legs...

                        Grey fox are much finer boned and dainty animals... Look at the length of the leg the anatomy of the head and muzzle, much finer than that of the red... Hope this clears is up
