    lost first kill with bow

Went out hunting hogs in Churchill. Me and my brother got into the blind about 600am as the light starts to make it so we can see I can make out two large shadows. It was two big hogs but they moved on before the feeder went off to keep them there. We waited then finally at 820am the big hogs strolled in I was thinking they where about 125lbs the biggest came closes first he was slightly quartered away giving me a great shot I thought. I drew back put my 30yrd pin just behind his shoulder and let my carbon express with a Muzzy 125 grain heard the wap of the arrow on the skin the pig spins left. And runs. We give him a half hour and go looking for blood. But nothing searched for hours and nothing. It would have been my first kill with a bow but no luck I felt almost sick from not finding him. But after talking to a family member he said it was in the 200 lbs that's why I didn't find him. All I know is my next shot will be a broadside shot so it can blow rt thru.

200 pounds is not why you couldn't find him. You can kill em from 20 pounds to 500 pounds with a well placed arrow. At 30 yards don't just count on your arrow making a clean pass through on a big hog at 30 yards. They ARE tough. They also don't bleed much so even if you did pass through he may not have left much blood at all. They seal up fast! Better luck next time but I will NEVER shy away from a good quartering away shot on a big hog.

I'm sorry you lost your pig...that stinks! But, as stated above. if you are shooting BIG hogs broadside and you hit the shield, there's a good chance for a lost animal. The shield on a big (200+#) boar is substantial and can stop an aroow from the baddest compound out there.

I got lucky on my first bow kill on a hog. About 120-130# range I figure. I hit a double lung shot using the Redhead Blackout 3 blade fixed 100 grain. Went all the way through and nicked a rib on the exit side. Found the arrow on the blood trail, arrow had blood from broadhead to the nock. I guess I got lucky but a blind man could have found this one with all the blood. I may not be so lucky next time. Sorry to hear you lost it, keep at it.

Tough luck man. Those bigger hogs can be hard to find blood on, even with a well placed shot. Like has been said, they seal up quick. I have killed some and almost not found them. I knew I had great shots, and even heard them crash in the distance. We had really good blood the first 10-20 yards then it went to just little drops here and there. They are some tough animals.

if you got good penetration he is dead just wait for buzzards. i have had alot of perfect shots end up with no recovery on hogs. lots of money on broadheads and arrows have been lost also

Walking to my stand last year, I walked through a herd of black cows. I was running late so it was lighter than normal. One of the black cows had really short legs and it dawned on me that it was a hog and a nice one at that. I loaded the bow and shot him tight behind the shoulder and he ran to the brush about 75 yards away. I walked to my stand and hunted for 3 hours. On my way out I took up the trail. I found no blood or arrow at the scene of the crime and no blood on the way to thick nasty brush. I crawled around for a while and finally gave up. On my out the next morning, I heard the flapping of buzzard wings and went investigate. I found my 200+lb hog dead 20 yards into the brush and not one drop of blood until 5 feet from where he died.

They are amazingly tough, hard to kill and seldom bleed much. To shoot and recover a 200+lb hog is an accomplishment. Their noses are amazing. I think they smell downwind and they have a 6th sense that is indescribable. Keep shooting them. Broadside works if you're tight to the shoulder or in the shoulder for smaller ones. I killed a tremendous boar last year with a downward quartering away shot and he died in sight. Quartering away works great but it will cost an arrow every time.

                        Good luck!

I was with Kazrep on this hunt. MAN my heart was pounding when those hogs showed up. I have never killed any animal hunting and all I can say was that what I saw and heard made me feel something I have never thought I would feel. I am not about the fish in the barrel hunt, and even though there was a feeder there, this takes skill. Long story short I had to buy a PSE Brute LT package later that day.

We both went out the next day and hunted but nothing showed. We searched for hours for that hog and to my amazement, we found nothing but heavy tracks without blood.

I have 45 acres in the Leander area that I have started feeding and man I cant wait to stick my first pig/deer! THANKS KAZ for taking me with you and sharing some blind time. I know its hard to have 2 people in a blind. Your shot was perfect. And even though I kept saying "Stick him, stick him" you waited for him to turn just right. That big ******* just didnt want to die that day!

                          hahahha.
