                I wouldn't put rat poison inside the wall, and if they can't get to water they die and stink bad. For a 1" sized hole, get a small bag of Fix-all at the hardware store, and make it pretty thick- add the water slowly. Use an old plastic container to mix up. Mix it and when it get to the consistency of peanut butter, use the spatula to force it into the hole, pulling the spatula sideways to force it again the wall on the side of the hole to stick. If the hole is too big, jam crumpled up newspaper inside the wall until the hole has a solid backing so the Fix-all does not fall through.

                The sticky mouse traps work really well.
