patching a hole in the wall?

I need some help guys, I found a hole that mice were using to get into my house I had made a small hole in the wall from where my hot water heater is to run a cable for my cell phone booster in the living room. The mice made the hole from just large enough to get the cable through to about 1” diameter. They also chewed up my cable, that has been fixed. My question is what is the best way to patch the hole? It also needs to be simple as I’ll be the one doing the work and the only tools I have are fencing pliers

Squirt a tad bit of expanding foam in it?

Do you want to make it look good, or do you just want to keep the mice out? Best way to keep mice from chewing it bigger is to pack all the cracks and crevices full of mothballs and steelwool.

Doesnt have to look good, its behind the couch I got moth balls to put where the hot water heater is. I also have some of that foam stuff but I figured they would chew through it again.

They won't chew steel wool. It hurts their mouth.

If you have a cat/cats. ease up on feeding them so they will do their job.

Wrap some moth balls in steel wool and stuff it in the hole, then seal the hole with spray foam. Seal around the foam with caulk, and steal a cat to leave outside.
