Let's talk about MOVING to Texas!

Been here about 13 years or so!
1.) Cost of living lower than the multiple states I have lived in including my homestate of Louisiana.
2.) RN's are very well paid and are always in DEMAND.......but that is nationwide, especially for BSRN's!
3.) It is HOT as heck in the summer but the humidity is NOT horrible in central Texas.
4.) Very diverse community in Austin proper with very attractive suburbs.
5.) Housing is NOT cheap in that area but very competetive in this market.
6.) Capital cities tend to be very active and trafficky. Also the home of UT....plus or minus depends on your leanings.
7.) Good access to hill country, Dallas, San Antonio and Houston.
8.) Lots of lakes.
9.) Tons of GREENPEACE types, hippies and homeless but it is part of the overall charm of Austin City Limits.
10.) Not sure if 10K is enough to justify a move even with school payments. I would think CO would also be digging deep for RN's and willing to make the same deals.
11.) She would be getting closer to family!
12.) Nice to have choices..........enjoy as everyone does not have such a positive offer!

Up sides include many less tree huggers and much more friendly folks. You can also afford the quality recreation in Colorado on your vacations. I grew up in Ft. Collins and would never go back now except to visit.

I have visited (not lived) the midwest including Colorado during college and I tell you the scenery in Texas ranks up there with the best, in my opinion. If I were moving from another state hill country would be my first choice as well. But I would not pick Georgetown. West of there in Burnet, Liberty Hill would be my first choice.

Only pro I can think of that has not been mentioned is gulf coast fishing. Once you catch a red on a fly rod you will think differently about those trout in the streams.....

I have left Switzerland in 1985 and came to Houston, and i'm still here. I probably never leave Texas again, if they let me stay!!!
Pro's
9 months of good weather, (the summer months are hot)
No snow that sticks to the ground for longer than a few hours
Fairly cheap housing.
Friendly people ( even if you have an accent, and that may apply to you too........lol)
lots of hunting and fishing.
Awesome country side ( different then Colorado, but awesome)
The most beautifull Sunsets and Sunrises i've ever seen.
Hunting is awesome here.
Best State to live in.

Cons:
You might have to leave one day. (that would really bite)
Colorado is a long way from here. ( but you can get there from here within 24 hours or less).


Just try it, you are not leaving this state out of free will, once you have tasted it.

I know we'd be leaving some gorgeous country and you certainly can't beat the Rockies in the fall and winter, but having grown up here, you kinda get used to it. Elk huntin here is expensive too, I figure that's just the nature of the beast.

Will be a bit realistic here.

You will miss Colorado after a while.

Lots of pros to Texas. Austin area is beautiful and you can hunt year round for something. Winters are great, lots of times is short sleeve weather. But you will get cold cause it is a different cold than up in Colorado. Affordable housing and jobs. Very hot summers means scantilly clad women, the prettiest women in the world. Best bass fishing in the states. Not too far from the white river in Ar for the best trout fishing in the states. Texas has mountains, praries, forests, wetlands, lakes, rivers and ocean..we got it all.

Cons: Very high property tax and insurance. Very hot summers, makes you really appreciate October. Very expensive hunting and very little public land. For the most part a clear lake means you can see your feet in ankle deep water. Long drive for a weekend of snow-skiing.

Well Texas is Texas and that's enuff said. I don't know the numbers but will bet you a beer she can get more money than she thinks and more of loans if not all paid off if in desirable specialty.
Texas job market is predicted to lead the recovery once the trash is thrown out on Nov 2.

We moved here 12 years ago and it hasn't grown on us so much yet that I think we'll retire here. Our roots are back east as is most of our family. But you never know. Winters are great. My wife doesn't like the snow and ice. Summers are hot hot hot. Housing is relatively low cost. Early bow season is hotter than the dickens. I love the dove hunting but you have to get a lease for most hunting. In WV you just pull off the road about anywhere.

Dang Grant, I can't add a lot to all the above posts (other than to stay west of I35 if you want a lot of critters also). This applies if you stay in the "just north of Austin" area. Come on down and we'll for sure get after those javies.

I appreciate all the great advice guys. It'll be interesting to see if they really want to hire her. None of you guys may believe it, but I have been skiing a grand total of twice EVER even though I was born and raised here.

We've driven through alot of towns on our travels to and from Texas and there are a few of the towns mentioned that I could see moving too.

I know some of you guys mentioned that CO should pay for nurses too since there is a shortage everywhere but the truth is that CO is the 2nd lowest paid nursing state in the Union.

Keep the goods and the bads comin fellas, it's good to hear a bunch of different opinions.
