Let's talk about MOVING to Texas!

My wife (who's from Georgetown and an RN) got a phone call the other day from the recruiter at Seton Hospital (Austin Area). They wanted her to apply for a job there as they would really like her to come work for them. When she asked me what I thought, I gave an enthusiastic ! It's about 10k higher pay than here AND they could potentially pay off 65-80% of her student loans!

SO, I said I'd do some research on moving and I need some help from you guys:

    1. Tell me the good points about moving to/living in Texas
    2. Give me all the bad points about moving to/living in Texas
    3. What's the job market look like down there?
I'm not picky about what job I do, as long as my paycheck at least stays the same. I've got 9 years in at the same company doing everything from landscaping to IT to various financial responsibilities.
    4. How's the housing market?
    5. What are some of the better small towns around the Austin area?

We'd like to live in a smaller town as opposed to a big city. Neither of us would mind a commute if we could own a piece of ground outside the city.

She's also going to apply for jobs around Waco, Abilene and at St. Davids system in Austin, so you guys around there chime in too!

That's all I can think of for right now, I'm sure I'll need some help finding a job if/when she takes an offer there.

    Thanks guys!

No state income taxes, property taxes are on the high side. No vehicle property taxes.
Housing market is somewhat stable. We never had the outragous price increases so loses not that bad.
Fort Worth as plenty of hospitals and a couple more on the North and West side are in the planning stages.

Pm if you want. I live in Austin and my wife has worked at Seton hospital for the past four years (She just put in her notice that she was leaving though yesterday).

Moving from one Country to another is always difficult at first... But I think once you join ours, you'll be thankful you never go back...

                Pros:

                1. Duh! It's Texas.
                2. Good old fashioned family-friendly environment (for the most part), especially outside the huge cities.
                3. Diverse job environment, and hiring climate varies. Not as bad as many other places, but not booming overall like it was a couple of years ago either. Still better off than most probably.
                4. No state or local income taxes.
                5. Lots of hunting and fishing opportunities and tons of other recreational stuff - from Gulf Coast to pine forests to Hill Country to West Texas Rockies and canyons to the Great Plains.
                6. Housing is relatively affordable compared to a lot of other places.

                Cons

                1. It's close to Oklahoma.
                2. Big cities are big cities.
                3. Sales tax and property tax
                4. Not a lot of public land/free hunting available. Must get drawn for most public land hunting. Private land leases aren't cheap.
                5. No mountain streams teaming with trout rising to dry flies.

I have very good connections at Seton Highland Lakes in Burnet. Burnet is a great community with great schools. It is in the highland lakes meaning all the fishing and boating you can stand is just a few miles away. It is a small town with approx. 3500 pop. Send me a pm with your contact information and I can tell you more.

One major thing. Disconnect your turn signals. You'll only tick off the locals.

Pros: lots of hunting and mild winters most everywhere but the panhandle area. Friendly people, lots to do.
cons: humid and hotter than that place where the devil lives in the summer. also it isn't the Rockies in the fall! Hunting is expensive!
