The CHL process really isn't that bad anymore. You fill out your application on-line at the DPS website and pay via credit card for the app fee. The DPS application takes about 15-20 minutes. Then you need finger prints. You now are recommended to do the digital finger prints. Many places will do this, just make an appointment. Process takes 5 mintues and your prints are automatically remmitted to the state. Only thing you have to mail in now, is the course completion certificate, passport photos (generally provided as part of the 10 hr. class) and a photo holder you print off from the DPS website. That's it.
For the most part, all you give up is a Saturday and a couple hundred bucks. About $100 for application fee and the other $100 as a classroom fee for the instructor.

Oh yeah, and printing itself is not against the law. The law says, ".....intentionally fails to conceal the handgun". Simply being able to tell there is a gun there is not by itself a violation.
