I had one cousin on my father's side drown in the Brazos River when he was 17. He couldn't swim and it was only his second time on the river. He went with his girl friend. I was 14 and helped in the search and recovery. He had wedged under a large rock.
I also had a cousin on my mother's side that could swim like a fish. We grew up swimming in the Brazos River. He drown at Kimble Bend at age 50 with his family all around. Just went under and never came up.
I don't believe most people even know someone is in trouble until it is to late most of the time.
Be careful in the water and take nothing for granted, but enjoy the water.

People that are drowning don't holler "Help!" like you see on tv. When they come up out of the water, they only have time to take a breath, and go back down. No time to holler. After so long, they can't come up anymore. Someone can drown right behind you and you might not realize it.

a buddy of mine in college drowned at a party at his house on the bay. He did a flip off of the boat dock and lost his breath. He came up thrashing around and everyone thought he was joking. Another buddy grabbed him but let him go. This time he did not come up. 20-25 people within 20ft of him and we did not find him for 30min. I have taught both of my kids and their friends that when they are in a pool swimming that NO ONE will act like they are drowning.
