as a near drowning victim. I respect the water and the dangers. I think every person should learn how to swim.
x2 I think it's really sad!! Poor souls. My buddy in college decided to go skinny dipping with all the girls with a life jacket on. He can not swim very well at all. Everyone had been drinking but it was pretty funny seeing him lose his shorts but dawn a life jacket.

I can tell the same story on myself!! This is before water weinies though....... Dang, that can be taken out of context real quick.
Sad to hear. I can't imagine the helplessness of watching someone die when you can't do something to help.
When I was young I taught myself to swim by tying a rope to a dock and jumping in and paddle back. Increased the rope length as I got better.
There was a guy on a small am radio station in waxahachie that drowned because he could not swim. He never would wear a lifejacket and fell out of a boat while fishing. I just don't get it. My kids have been in swim lessons for 3 years now.

Pics (with your friend blurred out) or it didn't happen.
Good advice guys. And, to swallow my pride, I have been taking swimming lessons with my son. It is embarassing as all get out, but it is a great workout, and like was said before I don't want my kids to bury me.
In most cases as in LA yesterday, there would not have been as many casualties, if everyone would have taken a step back, and someone had the correct training. I relate this to Industrial incidents i.e. chmical spills, confined space rescue and such. Most of your casualties are rescuers without trianing. It is unfortunate that one person has to perish, but it is even more tragic that more than one perished. They could have been avoided. A very sad situation across the board.

That's nothing to be embarrassed about. You are doing something that could potentially save your life or the life of someone else.
Early this summer I had to take a swim test at a boy scout camp. You had to jump in feet first in the deep end and make 4 laps, 3 freestyle and 1 back stroke and then float for 5 minutes. I got nervous about the test part and took in some water before I got back to the top upon jumping in. It was a battle from there on out and only my pride saved me. I was out for nearly 2 days. Yes, I'm not in the best of shape but it taught me that anything can happen and if stress sets in you will not float.
there are 3 key things IMO that all kids should learn at an early age:
1. Respect (God, elders, property, nature etc.)
2. How to swim
3. How to ride a bike
I know there are a lot more things to learn but IMO these are very important.

I agree 100 percent.... I just dont think kids get out as much as they used to with all the new technology. Video Games, Computers, Endless amount of tc Channels... Its sad

When I took scuba diving lessons we had to swim something like 200 yards. A 15 yr old made it about 25 yards and stopped. For a long time I thought I was going to be the only person left in that class because no one could pass the swim test. I was the oldest and the most out of shape person there but the best swimmer.
I can but I aint real good at it.I dont swim very often but I can swim good enough that I probably would'nt ever have any trouble.I don't really know that for a fact though.I guess what I'm tryin to say is that if my feet are'nt on dry land I get a kinda nervous.I almost drowned when I was younger and I think that kinda......I don't wanna say it scared me but it made me think that I was'nt as good of a swimmer as I thought I was.I'll admit that if I saw someone drowning I would try to save them but I would probably drown too.
Hold on I thought of a better way of describing my swimmin skills so just ignore all that stuff that I wrote up there.I can swim but I aint a "strong swimmer" or whatever you call people that are really good at swimmin.......know what I'm talkin bout?
